Question 06 F150 Making Strange Noise

So i started up my truck before work today and went back in my house, when inside my house i could hear my truck making this weird noise. It almost sounded like a steaming kettle (loud whistle/whining). It started off light, then got louder and louder and then just stopped making the noise. So i hopped in it anyways and drove to work, didn't hear the noise at all on the ride.

But then after work i had to hop on the highway and i heard the noise again, this time while driving. It was the same thing, the noise started light, then got louder. It happend quite a few times on the 10 min ride on the highway, one way i could get the noise to stop though was to hit the gas a little bit. It seems pretty random though and the noise definetly seems to be coming from the engine area.

This happened one other time a few weeks ago while my truck was at idle (warming it up before work). I thought that maybe it was a fluke thing because it has not happened again. But i guess it's not a fluke thing as it happened again today, on a cold start and while driving with the engine warmed up.

I honestly have no idea what this could be, could it have anything to do with the very cold weather? Or some sort of exhaust leak?

I figured i'd post the problem on here first before i take it in to the shop, just to see if i can maybe get some opinions or see if maybe someone here has had the same problem.

Any help is appreciated, thanks..

My truck hasn't done this yet, but I have read a lot of posts concerning this noise. Most say it occurs in cold weather (25 degrees F or below), and that it is usually when crusing at 2000-2500 rpm. The long thread on this issue, seemed to point toward the alternator making this noise, and many guys' problems went away after the dealer replaced it. I think some were even told some of the alternators were faulty. The thread shouldn't be too far down, I just read it the other night. I will try to find it here in a bit, but I have some urgent ebaying to do first. Good luck.

This happened to my to the other day when temps sank to around -5 degrees with wind chills of -20-30 degrees.

Haven't heard it again as temps rose to mid 20's .

This could be a faulty alt. ?
