Exclamation Engine light?

My 2005 F-150 has a check battery light that recently (Friday before last) came on. Kind of new to being a truck owner so I asked around. Most said the alternator might be going bad. The very next day, the light went out so I assumed that it might be the battery might not be holding it's charge so I unplugged my cell phone charger, which I have a bad habit of leaving plugged in even if there isn't a phone. Everything went smooth until this past Friday when the light came on and began a steady stream of going oof and coming on. Now when I get in, the light comes on and stays on. What's going on and how can I fix it myself?

Take it to Autozone or any local mechanic with a diagnostic machine and the will scan it for free. Atleast AZ will.
