NEED HELP FAST !! 4x4 problem

A couple weeks ago my 06 FX4 worked fine in 4x4HI and Low. Well today when I needed it, it's not working. Now nothing has changed. I had this problem in the past last year.

Let me explain, I turn my selector switch in the cab to 4x4HI and nothing happens. No lights, no solenoids firing. Nothing. Same goes for 4x4LO.

What do I need to be looking at to possibly fix this. My wifes mustang when over a hill and I want to try and pull her out. I can't make it up the hill to her in 2x4 and couldn't help her if I was in 2x4.

Thanks !!

have you checked your fuses???

I'm not sure, but there must be a fuse that feeds power to the solenoid.

what did you do to fix it last year?

My 06 does the same thing. All I do is tap the transfer case and it works fine. I keep a handle from a floor jack in the bed of my truck just for this reason.

Tap on the shift motor in the back of the transfer case with a hammer. That may get it working temporarily but it will fail completely in the long run. Same thing mine did when it failed and I got it replaced under warranty, had less that 12k on on it.

Thanks for the tips. I ended up parking it about a mile away at a bank. One of the neighbors where the Mustang is at called a buddy who owned a tow truck. They got to me very quick. Even charged half price.

I am going to have to send this thing in the shop to get it fixed. My wife needs to drive my truck instead of her mustang due to the hills here. On the road that I live on is an offroad for a US Highway. It goes up a pretty steep hill. Anyways, there were 12 cars off the road near my the Mustang and that is just in a 1/8 mile radius.

Is this a problem with 06's? I am just wondering since all 3 of you that have had is problem had 06's.

First try the fuses. If not the fuses then that just leaves the motor on the T-case, connections to the motor or the dash switch. Give the motor a few good taps with your favorite BFH, check all the connections that go to the motor just to make sure that that are all connected and that no wires are cut or ripped out of the harness.

I ran it for a solid week in 4x4 a couple weeks ago on a deer hunting trip. It worked in sub zero temperatures just fine. And today, nothing.

I will smack it around a bit when the next wave of snow is over.

How much does the new motor cost>???

A guy I work with has a hole worn in the IWE vacuum line. So his 4x4 won't work period. Odd though cause I thought that having a hole in the line would force the 4x4 to engage full time. There is also the IWE solenoid that needs to be checked out which is a high fail rate item so it seems.

Thanks for the tip for smacking the actuator. It didn't work immediately, but within a min or two I went into 4x4 HI. It is slightly sticking to get it out of 4x4HI. So I need to drive it around a while.

The front differential is due for a fluid change anyways. So I should probably have it dropped off to a shop for some preventative maintenance.

it's been a F-series problem since 1992-current

the motor isn't very well sealed. moisture gets into there and corrodes the contacts/windings.

when you tap it, the corrosion loosens some...and usually allows the motor to do it's job. it's only a short-term fix though. eventually the corrosion will completely over-whelm it

try $300 from the Dealership

a junkyard is an excellent source. I paid $100 for the one in my last truck from the junkyard...and that included a t-case as well

I guess you learn something new everyday. All of my trucks, until the 04 have had manual T-case's so I never had to worry about actuator motors.

manual, you and I are talking about 2 different parts.

on the back of the t-case itself, there is a no **** motor. about the size of a medium sized vitamin bottle.

the part you are referencing is for the 4x4 IWE hub itself

also affects the Sport-Trac and Exploder from the same years.

crappy situation, but at least it's a relatively easy fix
