Vent Shade Removal

After looking on the web (and this site) for the best technique to remove my vent shades I finally went at it this morning. Some people suggested using zip ties to wiggle or saw them free, so I tried that after liberally spraying everything with WD-40. Long story short I replaced the zip ties with a steak knife and got them off.

Now I've got lots of foam and adhesive around my windows. I tried Goo-Gone X-treme to no avail. Does anyone have any better ideas besides WD-40 and elbow grease?

Now on to my bigger issue:
My vent shades on the front tucked into the mirror "triangle." Now the plastic "triangle" is bowed-out at the top and looks like crap. How can I get this to go back to its original place? Superglue?

Hmmm, I think I was able to rub/roll some of the adhesive off with my finger, then used some Avon Skin So Soft and a rag to get it off. That stuff usually works awsome for getting adhesive type stuff off.

As for the top of the mirrors, Im not sure. Heat the plastic up somehow (heatgun?) and just bend it back perhaps?

Thanks! I'll try both of those (whenever the heat gun at work turns up). Maybe even lighter fluid for the adhesive - that's what my dad always taught me to use...

It literally took my hours to get all of the adhesive foam off when I took off my vent shades. It took a lot of goof off and rubbing to get most of it off. There's still trace amounts of it on the door, but figured no one would look that closely.

I done this last summer. When taking my vent shades off, I also took off about an inch of paint along with it. Couldn't believe it. Luckily I have a friend who does body work and he fixed it right up. I used several coats of goo-gone to get the sticky film off. Took alot of time rubbing, but it finally came off.

Never again will I put anything on my truck that envolves sticky tape.

took my AVS shades off 2-3 months back because some of the adhesive had come loose.

it took about 1 week, used Goo Gone, WD-40, rubbing alcohol...but the best thing I found was friction. Ended up getting a friction blister on my thumbs...but the adhesive came right off. When the skin was raw, I used a teflon spatula

and then I promptly re-installed the damn things

Ventshade removal - Goto a Bodyshop

Ihad the same issue as the tape was not adhering to the shade. My advise ( if you want skin left on your thumbs) is to find a local body shop and pay them.. I did and they only charged me $25. Toomany things or solvents could do damage to the clearcoat....BEST MONEY ever spent. I will never put them back on...

This became pretty much my exact course of action. Except I never found a spatula... My thumbs are killing me but they're off and the truck is detailed and I've never been happier with how it looks.

Thanks to all for the sound advice.

Mineral Spirits work great!. I took off all of the residue the cheesy chrome handles left on the plastic. You can get a small can at the hardware store for $5-6. It also works great for removing road tar and the black paint on the emblems.
