DIY - Cam Phaser Replacement
Ok, so today I buttoned everything up and took the truck for a drive. Still runs like crap and makes the knocking sound once the engine has warmed up.
I need help.
Heres the problem in detail.
earlier this week I decided to change the Cam Phasers in my 2005 5.4L 3v F150 because it was running really rough and making the knocking sound that from every thing i've read so far points to the Cam Phasers. Also all the codes I was getting pointed to the same issue. I also decide to change the plugs at the same time.
The knocking doesn't start until the truck is running at a normal operating temp.
The hesitation or misfiring happens between 1000 and 2000 rps, sometimes even wider range up or down. its pretty bad. But it will go away after the truck has been driving for a while, sometimes resurfacing but not often. The engine temp seems to have nothing to do with this hesitation problem because if you turn the engine off and then restart the problem is back and takes a while to smooth out again.
So far Ive changed.
2 cam phasers
2 cam position sensors
1 cam sensor plug because it was broken
8 spark plugs
Between special tools and parts Im already out about $900
Any Ideas before I turn it over to ford mechanics and take it up the butt.
Any ideas or info would help.

Dont have the codes with me at the moment, there all related to cam position and timing.
If i remember correct P0316 P0345 were 2 0f the 4
As for hijacking the thread, I don't get on forums much so I wasn't aware that continuing the conversation about a related problem was in poor etiquette. Ill figure out how to start a new thread.

Mine are making noise at 37,000K. Have been a mechanic all my life and for two years now I have been on dis- ability.( Read.... money is very tight) Was staring at my engine today wondering about just exactly what do ya gotta do and then here it is. Thanks for a GREAT write up and pictures. I can borrow the wedge from the tech school and now I know i can handle this. thanks a million.
In most cases, it'll just continue to be an annoyance while your truck sounds like a diesel when idling at a drive through window. I have heard of one case where they suffered failure of the timing drive, but that might have been coincidental...
i would rather try the oil first.
I have a "kit" to do this job in the classifieds right now. I normally wouldn't push this up, but it is an unusual part to sell. I sold my truck, so my loss is your gain. Tool included as well. So if you have the dreaded tick, tick, tick ............ let me know.

, ever since i started using lucas oil (4000 miles ago) my engine has stopped ticking
