Please help I am stumped.

Okay,
I have taken my 04 F-150 to two dealerships and another private place and I have had work done on my 4x4 system eachtime. I had vacuum hoses done, and a solenoid replaced. It still has not worked and then one place told me it was the electronic lockers that was broken and another dealer said it's not the lockers and then called me later in the day and said it was the electronic lockers. Then they told me $1000 to fix it. Does that seem normal? I'm afraid to get this done because what if that isn't the problem. I'm really getting pissed off I love my truck and I wish someone knew what was up with it.

Symptoms are as follows:
You can feel something engage when you put it in neutral, move to 4x4 low and put it in drive. The whole truck feels ready for action. But the front tires wont spin. 4x4 high doesn't do a damn thing. I thought I had it fixed a while back until I got stuck in some sand at one my job sites.

I really need the help.

lets try to isolate the issue.

put your entire truck on jackstands. get it safely supported. and be careful. You can achieve some of this with 2 wheels on the ground...but it's better with all 4 off the ground.

Motor Off:
put the truck into neutral

spin both front tires by hand. watch the halfshafts while you do so.

You should see the halfshafts and front driveshaft rotate as you rotate the wheels.

this occurs since the IWE are engaged when the motor is off

Motor On #1:
spin the front tires by hand and watch your halfshafts and front driveshaft.

nothing should spin at all. this indicates your IWE system is operating properly

Motor On #2:
put the 4x4 switch to 4x4 hi, put the truck into neutral

try to spin the front wheels. watch your halfshafts. if working, they will spin since the hubs will be engaged.

Motor On #3:
with switch in 4x4 hi...and tranny in park

try to spin the front driveshaft.

it shouldn't spin. if so, check your halfshafts for spinning.

if it is spinning, it means your 4x4 selector motor on the t-case isn't working.

Test the 4x4 Selector motor:
motor off, 4x4 switch in 4x2 position, tranny in park

crawl under the truck and unbolt the motor from the t-case. use a wrench and manually position the t-case in 4x4hi.

try to spin front wheels.

if nothing spins (because it's locked in 4x4), this indicates that either the motor is bad...or that the motor control circuit is bad.

just be methodical and try 1 thing at a time. most likely the t-case motor isn't working properly...or the IWE isn't being told to engage.

Good job Tylus! That should give allot of information where to go. The only thing I might add would be to support the rear axle on jack stands and get it all off the wheels for safety or at least apply parking brake. Your steps should be in a book somewhere!

Edit: I think I recall someone had simular problems and smacked the t-case motor drive with a small hammer or something and cured the problem, although probably temporary.

Alright I am going to try this on the weekend. Thank you so much for your help that really means a lot. I'll let you know when I get it up on the jacks.

that is an old time fix from the 90's. Ford introduced the electric shift in 1992 I believe. Works a handful of times initially, but eventually the problem worsens and replacement is needed.

I had forgotten about the hammer method. Give the t-case motor several good whacks with a hammer and then try to shift to 4x4. the shock jars corrosion loose

the t-case motors get water inside them and then corrode. the corrosion makes the motor freeze up and go bad. that is why it's a good idea to shift to 4x4 1-2 times a month
