Do all 5.4L's sound like a quiet diesel at idle?

my '05 does it as well, 72,000 miles and no problems yet, thought the ticking was due to wear and milage, so i swapped from the 5w/20 to a 5w/30, still ticks..so i learn to live with it...still turns the 305's over...

My '04 makes the same "dieseling" noise and I actually don't mind the sound at all as long as it is not causing any mechanical damage.

dealer told me the cam phasers will get worse and will eventually make the engine jump time and shut off. I got mine fixed and it purrs a like a kitten now.

Mine's had the "diesel-like" sound since day one when I picked her up. Wife and a few friends have even commented on it.
The sound hasn't changed one bit since the first time I noticed it, so I'm not worrying.

Funny, I had wondered if anyone else noticed or thought about this topic.

Turbo77, that sounds a little reassuring. How many miles have you accrued so far? Has the sound gotten louder? All you others that have posted on this, can you also answer these questions, so we can get a few stats going here?

Search cam phasers and you'll find plenty of stats about the issue.

Jimbo, I've got a little over 6k on the odo as of this morning. Sound has not gotten louder or softer... zero change.

If she's changed in an slight way, I'd notice. I noticed loose head bolts on the wifes Durango just by the sound I was hearing. Mechanics thought I was nuts when I told them, they checked, and sure enough, they were loose.
Found out I had a bad rocker spring in my Pontiac... by the feeling I got thru the accel. pedal.

Think I notice things?!

Wow! You remind me of that computer altered guy driving the convertible, the oil commercial! The one where the mojo is flowing from the engine-pedal-and through his body. You are indeed gifted. Man, I thought I was bad about this stuff! Keep us posted.

I have yet to get ahold of my master Ford tech cousin. He must be farming late in the fields (or just not answering his phone, I don't blame him). But, I hope to get it to him for an evaluation, and hopefully, he will tell me that it will be fine. If he says I need phasers, then I guess the battle is on with the dealer I bought it from, who already told me there is nothing wrong with it. Regardless, the truck only has 30,000 miles, and is less than 36 months old, so the factory warranty should take care of it, right? I will be sure to post what I learn. Thanks, folks.

In park at hot idle, spin the engine up to 1500-2000 rpm. If the noise goes away, it's probably cam phasers. If the noise isn't there when the engine is cold, it's probably cam phasers.

Yes, that describes it perfectly. After reading the TSB about this, I listened for it while running it up past 1000 RPM last night. The rythmic knocking either stopped, or was not audible over the increased engine running noise, at and past 1000-1100 RPM. And yes, it only does it when up to full operating temp. Now the question is, is the sound slight enough to be normal, and if not, how do I convince the dealer to fix this?

Update:

I spoke with a Ford master tech, who happens to be a cousin, about my noise, on the phone tonight. It appears that I might just be overly critical of this 'new to me' truck. My subtle, dieseling idle sound, is not really detectable at the front of the cam cover, where a bad phaser will normally be heard. Mine, instead, appears to be more easily heard at the bottom of the exhaust manifolds, and cat system (near wheel wells and under the rear of the engine). This suggests possibly that the noise is a normal characteristic of the engine, resonating through the front part of the exhaust system. Another possibility, is a rattling of the innards of one of the cats. Again, my sound is very quiet, and absolutely not audible from the cab when the windows are up. Its definitely not a hard 'knock' or 'thump' as some describe with a bad phaser. Its more of a light clatter, like a few marbles being jarbled around rythmicly, in a glass jar. I am going to drive it over to him tomorrow or the next day, so he can evaluate the noise, just to be sure.

Also, for others reading about phasers, and wondering what they sound like, here is a post I made in another thread, with a link to a video clip, that was posted on an older thread, by another member:

"Go here: http://www.flatratetech.com/
and click the "video" tab at the top, and watch video number 22. It is long, and has some recordings of injector sounds, lash adjusters, a chain adjuster leak down startup, and good and bad cam phasers. The cam phaser recording is at 14:20, but start watching around 13:35 for some useful info on determining if the phasers are making the sound you are hearing. They show a recording in sequence of good-bad-and back to good phaser sound in about a 10 sec recording."

The injectors will always have a slight tick, the cam phaser and whatever else is under their can be replaced if under warranty. If your not under warranty I wouldnt worry about it, all the 04-08 5.4 3v make some motor noise after a couple times of flooring the gas

But a guy who is at the same camping as me have a 2004 XLT with like 300 000KM on it and it sound baaAaad !
