Another Cam Phaser Story
Another Cam Phaser Story
Well my buddy has an early 05 like mine and finally gave up he traded for a Dodge. Why you ask? Well he has had the cam phaser clack/knock for 2 years just like me so he finally took it to the dealer and they replaced both cam phasers. Well for some reason they decided to cut open the oil filter low and behold there was tons of metal shavings in the filter. Ford told him soon he will probaly need a new engine becuase of what the cam phasers did. I thought the cam phasers was just an annoyance becuase my truck has been doing it for 2 years too.So do the cam phasers actually hurt the engine or is it a cowensadence(sp)?
Dealer called me back today and said yep you have bad cam phasers. $1600 to fix but I have a powertrain warrnanty thank god. Im going to talk to him more when I pick it up.So shouldnt my motor be alot quiter now?

and click the "video" tab at the top, and watch video number 22. It is long, and has some recordings of injector sounds, lash adjusters, a chain adjuster leak down startup, and good and bad cam phasers. The cam phaser recording is at 14:20, but start watching around 13:35 for some useful info on determining if the phasers are making the sound you are hearing. They show a recording in sequence of good-bad-and back to good phaser sound in about a 10 sec recording.
Mine makes a bit of diesel racket as described by others with bad phasers, when very warm at idle. I can hear it best from the passenger side, at the wheel well and behind the tire. I am working on getting a master tech, who is a relative, to listen to mine, because my dealer said its normal. Mine doesn't sound normal to me for a 30,000 mile truck.
