Smoke in the cab - Need Help

I have a 08 f-150 Supercrew

On an intermittant basis i get smoke in the cab of the truck. I can't seem to make it happen. I notice it when I come to a stop. At first I thought it was a car behind me smoking because the smoke would travel in a forward path outside the truck. But it has happened when nobody was around me. I am seeing the smoke/fumes come into the cab too. I wasn't sure how it was getting in but the other day I saw it coming in the side window defrost vent on the drivers side. I can't pinpoint the odor. It is not an antifreeze smell. I look under the truck at the exhaust and engine areas for any drip or stains of something leaking and burning of something hot. It seems to happen when the engine is hot not cold. I've had to open the windows to clear out the smoke and smell. Any ideas????

I know if I had an 08 F150 and saw smoke coming from somewhere I'd go to the dealer before I came on a forum and asked.

Well, I took the truck to the dealer because the smell/fumes were coming into the cab almost on a daily basis. I think it is an exhaust smell.

The results... The dealer couldn't find anyhing wrong. It did not happen while they had it for the day. No error codes came up either. They did do an exhaust pressure test and found no leaks. They want it back (on Monday, they had it on a Friday) so they can drive it more to see if it happens again.

I have been driving it all weekend and it hasn't happened again. I'll see how it goes for the next few days but if it never does it again i'll be happy. If you have any guess on this problem let me know.

Thanks

If you could give us a better description of the smell of the smoke, that would help greatly! Wires burning, arching and sparking, insulation, tranny fluid, brake fluied.. they all have a differnt smell when burning. Any more information about the smell would help..

If its brand spankin new sometimes they leave these little tags attached to rubber bands around certain things in the engine compartment, like a hose or something, that have some big warning thingy written on it. At least they did with my crown vic when I got it new. It could've just been the engine heating up and burning away the rubber bands or the paper tags. It didn't cause any damage or anything. But I never got smoke inside the cabin.

If it truly is an "exhaust smell" then for your health and the health of your passengers (especially children), at least get a carbon monoxide meter/detector to see if you have potentially deadly gases entering your vehicle. Your dealer should be able to test CO levels in the vehicle as well.

Well it's been a month and a half since i posted last so here is an update.

The dealer couldn't find anything wrong. After getting it back I didn't get any smell/smoke in the cab for 2 weeks. In the past month a half it's only happened about 6 times. Twice the smoke was visibly coming out the air vents. At first i thought it might be outside temperature related. It was 50+ when it was happening but it did it the other day when it was in the 20's.

The best i can describe the smell is an oily/exhaust type of smell.

I did try driving with the smoke/CO detector from my house in the truck but it never detected anything. As a test i held it by the the exhaust pipe and it never went off either.

At this point i don't know what to do. Since i can't make it happen the dealer can't do anything for me. Nobody else seems to be having the problem either. Do i tell the dealer again? Whatever they did made it stop happening so frequently. All they said they did was a visual inspection of the exhaust and an exhaust pressure test.

If they can't do anything maybe i need to trade it in, which i don't want to really do since I have had it less than 6 months.

First off, get a new CO detector for your house. It should go off if you have it right in front of the tail pipe. Do you feel sleepy after an hour drive? Second, take it to a different dealer. How much do you trust the dealer you took it to? If there was a leak, they could have done a crap fix to save money hoping it would last. and third, oily/exhaust. is too different types of smell. take a real good look at EVERYTHING in the engine compartment to see if it looks like there was something leaking and hitting something hot and burning off. Any puddles in the drive?

The detector from my house is a smoke/carbon monoxide detector. It must not be working right. I will try another unit from the house.

No, I don't feel sleepy while driving long distances. I definitely know when the smell/smoke is coming in. It only lasts a minute if that. I open the windows for a minute and it's aired out.

I trust the dealer, but since I was there with my last truck they have moved the Ford lot and service to their Mercury lot and use the Mercury service department. As far as a cheap fix, they said they inspected the engine and exhaust system, did an exhaust leak test and nothing else.

I would say the smell is more of an exhaust smell. It doesn't smell like paper, rubber, animal or plastic burning. It's not antifreeze. When I see the smoke it is white. I have seen it come through the air vents and from what appears to be the passenger side front wheelwell area outside. It's has happened when I pulled into the driveway, I popped the hood and jump out to find it's origin but it is gone that quick.

I have inspected the the engine for factory tags etc and have found nothing suspcious. I have looked at the exhaust from the engine to the tailpipe tip and see no signs of drips or something that may have burned on it. The driveway is clean too.

Are there any links between the ventilation system and the exhaust? Maybe a valve opens that shouldn't or a filter is in backwards. I will be calling the dealer again tomorrow to see where to go from here.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
