I did notice they had different CCA. All I'm saying is that is what I was told, and as far as I'm concerned the are the same technology.

I don't see any fraud? What is the difference in the design of the read to and yellow top? I'm not battery expert, but I have read up on them, talked to the reps, and purchased one yellow and one red. The design of the Optima battery is completely different than the typical battery design. They look like a six pack because the plates are in a spiral design of very long thin plates separated by a plastic holder. This design give a battery with improved starting and deep cycle in the same battery.

Where from? I haven't search all that much but what I did find was pretty expensive.

Dry cell is a misnomer. Its not actually dry, its AGM a similar technology is a gell cell (VRLA). The acid is contained in some sort of other material that lets it function as a wet cell would without the sloshing or the spilling.
On their website they claim both.
Military grade dry cell Odyssey battery for ATV, watercraft, motorcycle,
automotive, marine, and commercial use.

Thanks to rugged construction and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) design, ODYSSEY™ batteries have an 8-12 year design life and a 3-10 year service life.

I have worked in the telecom industry for over 10 years. Most telecom equipment is designed to run on a +24 or -48 volt system, so again most systems have batteries, I have dealt with both VRLA and wet cells for years.

Here is some info on battery types including VRLA and the sub set of VRLA -AGM. This is basically what telecom standards say about the batteries. Our advandtages and disadvantages differ because of application. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gel_cel..._mat_.28AGM.29

That being said, I had an odyssey in my race car for years and it worked great. It was a small light weight battery that cranked a smallblock with 11.5:1 compression with no problems. It recharged very quickly and did well when sitting idle between weekends or in the off season. For whatever reason, the odyssey that I had did not charge worth a snot on a trickle charge. It did like a 10/15/20 amp charge much better. Holley rebadges the oddsey and sells them under their brand.

Red tops are fast discharge fast charge batteries.
Yellow tops are slow discharge slow charge.

So a red top is at home starting your car and a yellow top is at home running your stereo. I have a red top because I used to have a 5 minute commute and was afraid that I'd kill it going back and forth to work (the slow charge part). Not my commute is a bit more, so my next battery will be a yellow top.

David, has your odometer gone out intermitently?
My '99 battery was going strong too.
I had the odometer show/not show everyday for about the last three years.
I really didn't want to take the dash apart to fix(per electrical sticky thread).

Last month, I had only driven the truck a few times and the gauges started to peg on start up.

I put in a new battery and side benefit, the odometer is bright and constant for two weeks now.
Couldn't be a coincidence.

Greenscrew- I have worked in automotive all my life and am very familiar with all of the different types of batteries. Am quite familiar with Optima. I'm saying it's fraud to sell you the same battery under 2 totally different use classifications. A deep cycle battery will not do it's job under starting conditions and a starting battery will not hold up under deep cycle conditions. There are RV/Boat crossbreeds that are designed to do both deep cycle and starting (obviously on a boat they are used for both- in an RV they are generally used only for deep cycle use and they have a starting battery for engine use) They are a compromise between the 2- as such they will generally not do a long term job of either. That's one of the reasons that type of battery is generally only warranteed for 18 mo.- 24 at the most. I still say it's ludicrous to sell the SAME battery for 2 totally different uses (which call for 2 different designs inside) and deceive the buyers into thinking they are getting different batteries.

What's a side benefit, and where is it installed in relation to the battery?

...or, was the odo brightness a side benefit of installing a new battery?

I'm still going strong on my original 05 battery btw, and i expect to get at least a couple more years, easily, out of it.

I use my truck for a dialy driver. No off roading no fancy stereo. When the time comes I definitely would love to put a yellow top or kinetic but I just can't justify the cost. I recently thought I would have to buy a new battery after I left the lights on all morning. Had a tow come out and it would jump start. Green button on top had turned red. Any way the shop put it on a charger for about 30 minutes and it started and has been running every since.
