Question Supercrew OEM stepbar

I'm waiting to repaint my chrome/ploished stainless steel 08 supercrew step bars and I'm wondering if you can remove the plastic step pads.. they look like they have a bit of give to them, but I dunno how they are attached and I dont want to break them off permanently.. they are currently painted black with some basic rustoleum enamel paint, but I want to try a different paint that might be a bit more durable..

any ideas? here's a pic

I would have them Line-X'ed. That would last awhile.

Line-X or not, is there a way to remove the plastic step pads without breaking them off?

The ones I had laying around had allen screws holding down the pads and phillips holding on the end caps from the bottom.
