4x4sprcrw with 4.6L ?

hi there, hope u guys can help me decide what to do. just bought an 04 supercrew 4x4 with a 4.6l engine, and it feels like a very heavy truck.
it seems like i can do some modifications (CAI,exhaust, chip, etc) but im not sure if finally the truck will get much hp like a 5.4 , or at least will not feel that heavy , even if i put a little larger tires .

should i go for it ?

cool ! . thnks

Custom Tuning, a cold air intake, and an exhaust system will get your power up big time.

Check out the tuner section for more info. Yes its absolutely worth it.

i had an 06 supercrew with the 4.6 it had the chip;exhaust;cai, and changed the gears to 4.56. it gave it great horsepower but still wont feel like the 5.4 thats why i traded it in for an 08 fx4 supercrew 5.4

i have almost the same truck and I did the exhaust, chip, cai, and 20s and it made a huge difference. I don't know about other mods (I'm still learning).

Honestly asking a question here because I really don't know....and don't want to beat your dead horse:

But why do y'all buy a Screw 4X4 with the 4.6L v-8, only saving ~$900, then spend thousands of dollars on performance additions only to have it still under the power of the 5.4L???

I know the 4.6L only gets about 1mpg better than the 5.4L so I know it's not gas mileage.

Good luck with your truck. Although it feels heavy, it'll still do whaever it is you need done barring towing a house....

I've never heard that the power of the two were that far off, only thing i've heard is when it come to towing, the 5.4L will stand out and go.

I also believe the track record of the 4.6L is far better then the 5.4L.

I have an 07 SCrew 4x4 with the 4.6, I have no complaints about power, It's not a race car.

I love my little sport truck with the 4.6. I don't need to tow anything, just drive and show off.

The new 4.6 is rated at 246 HP and 298 Ft/LB.

With just custom tuning and a CAI you can get a 4.6 to 5.4 numbers.
From the things people say here you would expect the 5.4 to act like a monster, truth is my 4.6 has only a AF1 intake and I have 3.55 gears, 4x4 and 20's that hardly help. I recently test drove a 2004 5.4, 17 (maybe 18") rims with 3.73 gears and it was not what I expected. Yeah it moved out a little faster but it did not live up to the 5.4 hype this forum is filled with.

E-fans are coming for mine in a couple weeks then a tuner, after those I fully expect it to keep up with the 5.4

I saved in the area of $1,500 on the 4.6 because they could not move them. For $900 go ahead and get the 5.4, but the 4.6 with some mods could no doubt run with a 5.4 Now also keep in mind a 5.4 modded would smoke a 4.6 but you cant win all the time

can the 4.6 be had with electric 4wd? The highest trim level one can get with a 4.6 is xlt?

Why is the 4.6 more reliable? Is it just because of the spark plug issue?

First off... you made a mistake. A 4.6l V8 4x4 Screw is going to weigh in at 7000 lbs. Good luck trying to make it go fast with that engine. I betcha if you and I raced, my little 4.2l might win. (But I doubt that...) It'd be so close, it'd be a photo finish.

Yes I have a 4.6 with ESOF, it is XLT.

The 4.6 & 5.4 both have great reliability, but as mentioned the 4.6 does not have the Platinum plugs and therefore does not have the spark plug issue.

to OP: if you have about $1,500 laying around, I suggest you buy 4.56 gears front/rear (about $500/axle) and get a good tuner with custom dyno tunes.

the gears will make your truck a different beast overnight, and the tuner can probably squeeze another 15 hp out of the 4.6.

guy at work has a xlt 4.6 screw 4x4 with 3.55's. I have 5.4 FX4 Screw.

the difference is alike to driving a Mustang V-6, and then driving a Mustang GT. notieceable power difference...especially down low. also, the 4.6 truck downshifts at the slightest incline.

in my gallery there are towing pics of my truck. the trailer belongs to the 4.6 guy. to be truthful, he was happy with his truck because he didn't know better. Once he took a ride in with my 5.4, he was pissed he had "saved" money and gotten the smaller v-8. Especially since he tows a race car every weekend.

that is just a funny statement. you really think bolt ons can account for a 54 hp difference? mods will greatly close the gap

yep, and the 5.4 screw is 5,800 to 6,000 depending on trim level and additional options installed
