Miles to Empty Very Inaccurate??

I put 5.8 gallons of gas ($20) worth from the truck saying 0 miles to empty and had been driven a few miles to the gas station. After the $20 worth the computer shows 45 miles to empty. 5.8 gallons multiplied by 14mpg is around 83 miles to empty. What is wrong with the truck? If I pull the battery cable for a little while and let the computer reset itself will that correct the problem? This isnt the first time I have noticed this problem.

Your truck is thirsty. It will lie to you to get what it wants.

I don't have this on my XLT but I would venture to say that a margin of error is built in on purpose to make sure you don't run out of fuel.

I used to put in the same amout and it would read accurate. I was coning back from home one day and the truck got down to about 40 miles to empty and I put $20 worth of gas in at around the same price per gallon and it didnt even register that I had put gas in the truck. This thing is strange.

Doesnt the Scangauge get its information from the same place as the miles to empty?

I watched a show on this not too long ago because people have been running out of gas due to high gas prices. A guy drove a van that said "0" miles to go for another 45 miles or so before he completley ran out. I do think they falsify the results to help the fuel pump stay cool.

I don't think technology is good enough to accurately read it. At least the technology fords wants to spend on it.

Pretty sad how they put a feature on that isn't even accurate.

I had this explained once by my old shop foreman at VW. He said it had to do with the number of gallons in the tank and your average mpg. It makes sense since it's not changing constantly like your instant mpg does.

Fred and Bob wanted to find out how many people were Republicans and how many were Democrats.
They decided to conduct surveys, and went to opposite sides of the street.

Fred asked 100 people and determined that 51% were Republicans and 49% were Democrats.

Bob asked three people, threw down his clipboard and yelled, "Everybodys a damn Democrat!"

The scanguage can be calibrated. It shows the information it does so you are not streaking around on fumes when the light comes on!

I understand what your saying I have had the same problem too, filling up on E and only taking 20 or so gallons... however this past weekend while towing my trailer I ran it down to 0 miles to empty as I had only a few miles to go to get to where I was going, when I filled up it took 25.8 gallons on a 26 gallon tank, so for once it its life it was accurate.

It's probably just the reserve they have built into it. Every vehicle I've owned does not run out of gas as soon as it hits empty. When I was in highschool several years ago I took my parents 92 or 93 town car about 50 miles after the miles to empty went to 0.
