Just Had TSB 8-14-3 done!
I couldn't disagree with you more. Lets keep our customers in the dark about potential problems with their trucks. That's a great attitude. What if the general public did not know about the spark plug TSB so everyone destroys their engine from routine maintenance. I guess from the dealer point of view, they would have made a ton of money fixing all of the screw-ups, but it would have been awful for the consumer and awful for Fords reputation. I am never in favor of restricting knowledge.
Quintin has a 100% valid point. While things like the spark plug issue may validate your point, there are thousands of people who will read about this TSB, start listening to their trucks in traffic and decide they have this problem, and as Quintin said, show up demanding the TSB be performed, even though it may not apply. I agree that restricting knowledge can be bad, the problem is too many people gain too little knowledge but think they know everything, especially when dealing with auto technicians, many assume they are getting screwed automatically.
I really wish TSB information was not made available to the public.
Here's how this goes down. Mr. Customer reads on F150online.com that some dude got his truck fixed with a calibration update from a TSB. Whether or not he had that problem, he scurries down to his local dealer to get this TSB done; after all, it helped someone else's truck, it's gotta be good for his, right?
So, Mr. Customer shows up at my door step and says "I want TSB 08-14-03 done." I pull it up and say, "Sir, I can't perform this bulletin." He goes, "Why?!" "Well, sir, it only applies to certain trucks built between 12/4/2006 and 5/20/2008, your truck doesn't fall into this build date range."
Mr. Customer tells me I'm a scum suckin' liar, after all he read on the internet that it applies to all F150s of a certain model year, and that I better reprogram his freaking truck, or else. Problem is, under warranty, I can't reprogram his truck because I won't get paid to reprogram it since his truck doesn't fall into the build date range for that particular TSB. He storms off, pissed and upset when in reality there was nothing I could do. He comes and registers at F150online.com and bitches about dealerships being thieves and liars and crooks.
Now, conversely, let's say that he has a problem, which may or may not be related to this bulletin, and his truck falls within the build date range, and I reprogram it. He of course is expecting some miraculous improvements, which he may or may not see. For the sake of argument, let's say that the calibration update doesn't fix his concern. Well, I just made one repair attempt on his vehicle; I'm now legally obligated to repair the concern, and in most states, I have two more tries to get it right before we get to the lemon law stage to fix his truck, and he's probably gonna blast me as an incompetent loser in the survey anyways. He too comes and registers on F150online.com and tells people to avoid my dealership, 'cause I can't fix his "problem."
The general public has no business with access to TSBs. All it does is complicate matters at the dealership level.

I understand that TSB's can make the dealer's life more difficult because of stupid people that don't understand what they're talking about. The problem with restricting TSB's is that you're punishing the intelligent people that can use TSB information as a tool because of stupid people that cause the dealership problems.

I understand your position and if I were in your job, I would probably feel the same way. However, back in 2005 when my truck was hesitating on acceleration, so badly that it was dangerous, had I not known the TSB existed, I probably would never have gotten the reflash I needed. When I described the problem to the service manager, he looked at me with a dumb expression and said that is just the way these vehicles drive, you have to live with it. So, I said what about TSBXXX-XX-XX and he then had a very blank look, pulled it up on his computer, read it, and said "oh". There was a description of my very problem and the solution. The dealer even had to download the program from Ford to do the reflash, as they did not have it. So, what I'm saying, it goes both ways. No doubt, some of the customers abuse it and really don't understand how they work, but some of us need the info just to deal with some dealer idiots.
I can see both sides of the issue. But isn't more knowledge on an issue better for everyone concerned? You can easily say to Mr. Customer that this TSB affects only trucks within these build dates. Whether he goes and rants on F150online.com is up to him.
Let me give you an example. On my 04 SCab, I had the third brake light leak. I brought it into the dealership for them to look at (not knowing of the TSB for it). I walked out of there 2 hours later with a bill for $100+ because they said my third brake light was broken/cracked probably due to a rock or hail or something. I REALIZE not all dealerships are stealerships, but had I known about the TSB, I would have at least inquired.

I appreciate the interest in debating whether or not providing TSB's to the public is right or wrong..............................however
All I really care about is getting my hands on TSB 8-14-3 (complete bulletin)
I have searched the web and gone to several sources and so far............ I cannot even find a listing on any site for TSB's for the F-150 that includes TSB 8-14-3.
I definately have this problem and would prefer to hand deliver the TSB to the Service Manger who already wants to start doing surgery on my transmission. I told him that this problem seemed to be a computer or programming type issue due to no other problems or symptoms. But, he has checked the fluid and now wants to begin transmission surgery.
I would really like to see this TSB..............Thanks!!

But again, I don't see how knowledge in the hands of its consumers is a bad thing. You will always have good and bad consumers and good and bad dealers. My 2 cents for the day <- just a figurative term, not how much my actual thoughts are worth. LOL.
Then go to your dealership and ask them to pull it up. Like the dealership guys said, they have that information. The original intent for that information was for internal use (ie Ford and its service dept).

It's strange and sad that many Customers don't trust dealerships service departments to do their job and feel the need to look up technical information on their own. Maybe if I hadn't personally experienced either the lack of knowledge or lack of motivation to fix my truck I would see it differently. If there was no problem with these TSB's getting done maybe people would not be looking them up.
I was a technician working on military aircraft for many years and I also hated pilots hearing rumors and then telling me how to fix rumors when the only way was by the book. Eventually by being competent they would trust me and trust me to do my job without input.
It seems the TSB info problem is a trust issue.
One of the biggest things that drove me to imports some years ago was Customer Service. If I asked a question and they were polite and said no this is not applicable to your truck why would I want improper maintenance done on my truck?
If I asked a question and they were rude, impatient or condescending, I would not trust them and they could not work on my truck.
If negative experiences or trust issues happened enough, at enough dealers I would leave the brand.

I will agree it's "sad" but it's definately not "strange".
I stopped by the Ford dealership 2 days ago to order a part and asked the "service manager" about my transmission problem. He asked if i had checked the fluid. I said, yes... the level. He said how about the color. I said no and we we went to my truck and pulled the stick to look at the color which looked perfect .... along with the level. He said, without pulling the transmission and only pulling the pan, we can look at some throttle units from underneath and see if they could be causing the problem. I told him the whole issue appeared to me to be computer or electronic related...... like something signally the transmission to jump to neutral or something rather than the transmission mechanically slipping.... etc.
Anyway, today I went back by to pick up the part I ordered.
1) While at the parts counter I asked the rep if he could access the TSB. He said no but he thought the service guys could do it.
2) I went to service and asked, he said "NO" but I think the parts guys can. I told him parts said you could...... I guess I'll just search some more online.
3) Went to the specific service area where they service Trucks and asked a guy in their office area, he said no.............but I the guys in the main service area should be able to do it.
Yes, I went to the dealership........all 3 tried to send me to someone else but noone even acted remotely as if they had any ability or access to the Ford TSB's.
No........it's not strange at all that people don't trust dealerships. I am 50 and I can tell you countless stories of other dealerships with much worse issues than this.
A friend of mine blew his top this AM when I told him this story and went off on a rant about these crocks would probably charge me $2000 for a transmission repair.....after only spending 15 min to update the PCM..........and these are the same guys that his tax $$ are going to bail out.........
Anyway......... looks like I will have to try another Ford dealer.

Got mine done a few days ago. HUGE difference, no flare and slamming into gear at all.
My $0.02 on the TSBs being public information:
I'm a Service Manager, have access to AllData, just send me an email if you need info on a TSB......it's called right-to-know. If those at dealerships had people skills, they would know how to tell "Mr. Customer" the right way that a particular TSB doesn't apply to their vehicle. Again, just my $0.02.

Ok..........simply called a second area Ford dealer.
Within 1-2 minutes the service rep was reading the TSB to me and sent it to me via email.
I have an appt at 7:30am with a tech to have the PCM reprogrammed.
I asked this rep who at dealerships had access to the TSBs. She said just about anyone at any dealership............particularly anyone in service.
(NOTE: I also sent an email to the previous dealer with zero service and informed them of their actions. I sent the email to service, sales, and owner. I did include the fact that I had easily located the TSB at another dealer and they were reprogramming my PCM in the AM. I also indicated that I was also going to be reviewing my options and their remaining '08 and '09 inventory.)
