OK guys here's the story. 39K miles my 3rd gear goes out and I have the tranny rebuilt. Everything fine until 8K miles later it starts slipping. Took it to the shop the next day after it started slipping. Same shop rebuilds it again but he says it doesn't drive right. He said it wouldn't hold pressure or something of that nature. Also said it would do fine with OD off, but would act crazy with it on. Now he is saying something about new solenoids and now a "new computer" coming in. I guess this would be a new PCM possibly..this info is coming from my dad so I couldn't ask for sure. He has had the truck for three weeks now and he just can't seem to get it right. Has anybody had similiar problems similar to mine? Or know what in the world is going on? Thanks for the help guys.
Your mechanic is diagnosing a problem and trying to fix it. Sometimes the first "fix" doesn't always do the job. Sometimes you fix the initial thing giving you problems, only to find more things have gone wrong. Ask the guy working on your trans whats going on, he would have a much better idea then ANY of us. I am sure he would be more then willing to explain everything to you, in a way you understand. I know I do all the time with customers.
Rebuilding transmissions is an art, sort of a way. If anything like Allison's autos years ago, there are updates and revisions and you have to keep up with this constantly. If my trans went out I would get a new one from ford with warranty. The more complicated our transmissions become, the more difficult they are to rebuild unless you can find the right tech with the latest and greatest updates. jmo
x2. When my transmission blew up at 72k, i replaced it with one that was rebuilt by FORD and they slapped a 75k mile warranty on it. Its been perfect for the 16k i've put on it.
Rebuild from a repuatble trans shop are just as good, if not better, then Ford. I personally wouldn't of gone to Ford either, if I had no warranty on it, but thats a personal choice.
Any reputable dealer would have, and should have, warrantied their work. You said he is fixing it for you, correct ?
Many of Ford's "new" trans are also reman'd. New interior, used shell. Most, not all.

But in my situation, i limped my truck to a dealer on I-5 (since thats where it broke down) and the guy gave me a good deal and had the tranny in the shop AND gave me the 75k warranty. I pulled out with the new tranny bolted up the very next day.

I agree. I wouldn't have gone to Ford without the warranty.

Long story-short, My son took his truck into a reputable transmission shop for his simple C6 trans rebuild with a 90 day warranty. Didn't last a week. It was in and out of the shop for a month and never got it right. Finally sold it because the shop just basically said screw you, we can't get it any better. As a matter of fact, they said at one point, were going to to put in drive, get it to 20 mph or so and slam it into reverse to try to flush the system out. Naturally, I yanked my son away from this shop and told him to dump it and move on or go to a better shop. I mean this was a C6, simple overhaul. Like I said before, it's knowledge. Proper training is the key.
From the way you are describing this shop, they do not sound like they know what they are doing, or could posibly be considered reputable. How did you determine to use them ? (if you don't mind me asking) You don't have to say which shop, just curious how you go about finding a "good" shop ? especially a trans shop . (being at a shop, its always interesting to get feedback from someone who need to find a shop, ya know ?)
On another note, I have had a customer need a trans rebuild. We did so. He came back complaining about it slipping and a loss of power. There was nothing wrong. Every single tech I had test drive it also said they felt nothing out of the ordinary. Still brought it to my trans guy, had him go through everything again ( out of my pocket ) and put it back together. The customer still thinks there is a problem. What am i suppose to do ? Continue rebuilding transmissions for him ? Sometimes the rebuilder can be put in a hard spot. After tons of customers doing simliar things, he may start assuming everyone is like that. Not saying this is your case whatsoever, just throwing out other experiences from this side of the "counter" .
