Re-Gearing question...

I Need a whole new rear end. The whole thing will run me around $1100. Would it be more beneficial for me to go with better gears? I have 35in Toyo MT's and think this might be my opportunity to regear. If so any suggestions on what I should go with? Also would regearing help my gas milage? Thanks

What gears do you have now?
If you have 3.55s 4.10s would be a good improvement
If you have 3.73s 4.56s would be better

They will probably help with city mileage but highway mileage will probably go down from the increased RPMs.

don't go 1/2 a**'d with 4.10 gears

if you're going to spend the money, get the 4.56 gears. it will make the truck a completely different animal

I don't think I have this option anymore. I talked with my buddy who's fixing it, and it would cost a LOT more than I thought to have the whole thing re-geared. He's going to put stock 3.73s on there again. I'll keep dreaming.

When I had a mustang I had 4.30's on 26 inch tires.

I'd go 4.56 min on a 35 inch tire.

yeah, you're buddy is bs'ing you. The only difference between the cost of the install will be the price difference between new 3.73 and 4.56 gears.

should be maybe $50 more, max $100.

unless he is talking about swapping out the front axle as well. you 4x2 or 4x4?

Not meaning to hijack the thread but would it make a difference if I only regeared the rear first because I only have enough money for that and need gears bad? And then did the front later on as long as I don't engage 4 wheel drive while I only have the rear re-geared?

IF you dont plan on using 4x4 you can do this. But be warned that if you do accidentally engage it you are going to F everything up big time. I would just save the money and wait until you can do them both at the same time.

And to the OP, go 4.56 and never look back., unless you are considering a bigger tire yet. If you are going to go bigger you may even want to look at 4.88's. Either way if you have to have it re-geared you might as well go and spend the extra little bit and have the rear done to 4.56 and then all you will have to do is pay labor to have the front one install which would be alot cheaper then doing the swap and then later on having to swap out the gears you paid to put in anyway.

you speak the truth

each axle should be roughly $500-700 for the labor and parts. if you live in a high cost of living area (like I do), you can expect almost $1k per axle. The shops in Washington wanted $500ish for the rear, and about $550 for the front

yes, you could. should you? not at all.

say an IWE fails? or you try to roll the truck in neutral while engine off. you are looking at some serious breakage is it somehow gets into 4x4 with different gearsets in the axles

what motor?

4.6 has the 8.8 axle
5.4 has the 9.75 axle

they both have the same front axle. IMO, FORD Racing is the way to go for gears

Look at www.nationaldrivetrain.com for good deals on gears...

I got my Motive 4.10s and they've worked great.

The front is an 8.8

They do make 4.30's for the rear, but no one that I know of offers an 4.30 reverse cut needed for the front.
