I was thinking this morning on the way to work
how would the steering wheel controls work on an aftermarket head unit

yes , u usually have to buy an a " lil guy " (not sure the name, interface? )
for it and hook it up to the steering wheel controls
i have the D3 and the interface, it is a must. it was like $70 i think

Most aftermarket stereos don't have a plug-in module to make them compatible with the steering wheel controls.
So, you end up using a module that connects to the steering wheel control wire and has an IR transmitter to simulate your head unit's remote control. You mount the transmitter where it can point directly at the head unit. They're in the same section at Crutchfield as the plug-in modules.

For my pioneer i got a adapter made by "periphials". However, I paid to have it installed, it is way harder then it looks. You have to find the wire and then tell it what to do with that wire and stuff.
