Performance Cams

I was looking at Crane Cams, Crower Cams, and Comp Cams at http://www.rpmoutlet.com Im not sure which cams really are better then the others. I looked into it and it looks as if I can just take the valve covers off, hit the bolt on the sprocket with my 3/8 impact, and not have to mess with the timing chain at all or pull the motor. (assuming I saw the pictures correctly and both sprockets are at the front of the motor so I dont have to pull it.)

So my question is, who makes a better cam? Also, Im an auto tech so Im fairly good with doing whatever, however we dont have a machine shop as part of our shop, how hard is it to change out the valve springs? I havent done it before, im sure my buddy has though who works at the shop.

I think with the valve covers off it would be easy to change out the cams, but they all recommend valve springs.

Any advice would be awesome!
Thanks!

I wouldn't buy from them if I were you. On one of the mustang forums i frequent there are numerous complaints about getting the wrong product and then not even being able to get a refund or exhange. I guess its your call but I am just letting you know what I have heard. Also what does your truck have done to it already that you think a cam would be the next step?

Again my sig doesnt work, but I have a 8PSI whipple, True dual with Xpipe and all that. Im debating on going over 8PSI, other wise I plan to go into the trans somewhat, and was thinking of cams.

thanks for the heads up on the site, im sure I can find them else where. Only thing Im unsure of is valve springs. I still have a long list of what to do.

Oh look sig works again

Check out this month's issue of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords. (MM&FF)

There is a good artical in there about 3 valve cams and cam-lockouts and even mentions somthing about which cams that Comp says need a new valve train and which ones dont.

I'm sure it will give you some information you may be looking for. I found it to be quite informational .

Its pretty easy to get the cam out of these trucks. Getting to the valve cover on the passenger side is a bit tough. You'll need the bolt that holds the sprocket on the cam as its torque to yield. Comp probably sells the wedge tool that you'll need.

I recieved some really good tips here.

Awesome links guys! Thanks a bunch! Im looking at the STAGE 2 Blower XFI™ NSR (No Springs Required) 3 Valve Camshaft Sets Suppose to be 25whp with a mild tune, plus I dont have to worry bout the springs which I dont know if I feel comfortable with doing on my daily driver.

You guys rock!

Or maybe stage 1, hmmm!

Ok probably stage 1, but awesome Video on cam removal!

I've seen it posted multiple times on the mustang boards (3V) about stage 2 cams not being "worth" it.

I can only imagine how stage 1's feel... or don't feel.

Just my thoughts/2cents.

I applaude you for actually going after them.... not many people here have.

I've heard the same about Stage 2. Alot of people say Stage 1 is good, and go for Stage 3 if you want real power...I guess Stage 2 just isn't worth the $$$ and time spent to just 1/2 way the job

Well i fear going to 10psi boost due to the bottom end coming apart unless you have an amazing tune. My goal is 450wheel horse, so at 8psi, and long tube header back exhaust, stage 1 cams (?), torque converter, valve body, 4.10s, 42lb injectors I maybe somewhat close!

Assuming I can get 400RWHP at 8PSI and a badass tune. Then I would think longtubes and cams would push me over the edge. All wishful thinking though. Also, all the cams and stages cost the same, only thing is I dunno about the valve springs. Ive never done that as a machine shot does our heads. Cams I barely have to do anything.

I really hope to hit high 12's.
JDM: 12.89
• Stock Automatic transmission
• Stock 5.4 3 v engine
• Saleen series VI 5.4 supercharger
• JDM custom tune
• JDM cold air
• JDM supercharger pulleys
• JDM Full Exhaust • JDM Electric Fan kit
• JDM Heat Exchanger
• JDM Dual Fuel pump System
• JDM Traction Bars
• 4.56 gears
• Saleen stock 23" Wheels and Tires

Me: Hope to be high 12s 1,000 foot elevation
Stock stall PI tripple Torque Converter, Valve body
5.4 with Cams (stage ???)
Whipple 8 PSI
Came with Cold air etc
JDM electric fan
Long tubes header back true dual
Heat exchanger is huge as is
42lb injectors
Traction bars
4.10s
slicks.

Stage 1 is for mid range power, stage 2 is for more boost and mid to high range boost. So I dunno what to choose. Nice thing too, is you dont need a tune with those cams, but with a tune for them it helps out alot more!
