Odd sound

Hey guys, need help diagnoising an odd sound I've been hearing from my truck lately.

Whenever I shift from park to drive, or vice versa, I hear what seems to be a fairly loud pinging noise coming from under the truck. Its one ping right after the truck shifts from those positions.

I really don't think its anything with the transmission internally. It's shifting fine, no other odd noises or anything.

Which makes me narrow it down to somewhere on the drive line once it engages, but other then that I have no idea what it could be.

BTW: Truck is an 05' STX

Thats what someone else suggested when they heard the sound.

I know what a "u-joint" is... but people always say "u-joints", meaning more than one? If so, where are they located and how many are there. Also, how hard of a job is it to fix in the driveway?

If you are married, get your wife under there and see if she can find where that noise is coming from, If not, find a buddy that can do the same. A bad u-joint can make that noise and there are two of them on your rear drive shaft, usually it's the rear one that goes first. But I got a feeling it's not a u-joint. I think you would here the noise more often, especially at low speeds. btw, my wife would say f**k off to me. It could be something simple quick fix. If it is a u-joint, pretty easy if you have the right tools. I'm not looking for day I have the replace mine on my 04 f-150 because of the new design. It used to be a piece of cake that had snap rings, remove them and press out the u-joint and replace with a new one. But I haven't had the pleasure to do these yet. Good luck, someone on here can help your through this if it's a u-joint. Good luck

How much do you think it would cost to have them replaced at the dealer? (roughly)

Or... would it cost to bring it to the dealer and have them inspect it to see if thats the problem? (out of warranty)
