Pinion Bearing in the Rear Differential Failed???
Pinion Bearing in the Rear Differential Failed???
Hey Guys,
So I've had a terrible high pitched whining or whistle on the highway for the past two weeks. Finally took it to a shop and the tech (not a Ford dealership tech) said it's the pinion bearing in the rear differential. He said I'd have to replace it and that would be roughly $2,500. We've had several other cars serviced at this place and we've always gotten fair prices and fixes from them in the past.
Does any of this make any sense to anyone?
However, I just had the entire rear end replaced on the truck in February of 2006 by the Stillwater Ford dealership because I was in an accident where we slid up on boulders after hitting ice and it bent the arm sticking downwards on the rear axle by the tire and rim. I have done ZERO towing, off roading, etc in the truck since I've owned it and much less in the past two years.

You're just the guy I wanted to talk to. So this really can happen on a truck within 2 years even if it never sees off roading or towing? How much should I really be looking at paying?
I was just doing a search and it looks like Ford has a pinion bearing replacement kit for $1,000 since they had a lot of problems with rear end whine on the 04 and 05 F150. Is that really true? Any idea how much labor would be on something like that?
Thanks again,
Duke

I also think the $1,000 pinion bearing replacement kit that I read about is way too steep for this. I guess it's logical that this could be the problem though.
However, I'm going to put some pressure on the body shop and Stillwater Ford who replaced the entire rear end in 2006 and see if I can get anywhere.
If that doesn't work, then it's going around town with a For Sale sign. I don't even have the $1,000 to fix it at this point so it'll also have to run around making it's noise until it get sold, completely fails, or I start making more money.

$2500 seems way too high. I would buy a new or remain rear end before I paid that. Hell a person could possibly find one in a junk yard with low miles on it.

I'd expect around $350-500 in labor.
I had my ring and pinion changed for $150 in labor +parts.
$2500 is ridiculus

$2500 is ridiculous. Guys are getting both axles rebuilt with new bearings, newgearsets, and upgraded differentials in addition to the labor costs for that much
Q!!!!!

All the bearings, parts wise, shouldn't be no more than $3-400, if that much, and figuring 4-6 hours labor to replace them all (if one failed, you should replace them all) at $100/hour labor (average, plus it's a nice round number to give you an easy guestimate), maybe $800-1000 or so.
2500?! They are trying to bend you over. 4wp just got done damn near rebuilding my whole rear end and it was less then that. I think I paid(paying) :o) $1700 for: new gears, abs sensor ring, wheel bearings, ls differential, labor, and 3/36 warranty.
The noise is all the time at high speeds. It's probably there at low speeds too, but the shrill high pitched whine is guaranteed to happen anytime you go at least 75, sometimes between 60-70 too just cruising down the highway.
