Bed Extender post install...2006

I have a factory bed extender I was given years ago and just now bought a truck that it will fit in. I searched the site and found/ordered/have the posts and bushings I need. The problem is that my 06, unlike most mentioned in the other threads, doesn't have extrusions or threads or a nut of any sort in the center hole in the D-pillar posts. I just have an oversized hole through a single thickness of metal...just like the lower and upper bushing holes. I kind of get the idea that some have just put a nut and washer on and that's my plan. Before I tear out the bedliner, what's the best way to get access to the inside of the pillar? I don't feel an access hole when I push the bedliner away and reach around (he he...I said "reach around"). Do I pull the tail lamps maybe?

I got up off my couch and looked again...I see now I just need to pull the rear lamp assembly. Of course I have every size nut except the right ones in my collection, need to make a trip to Tractor Suppy I guess. I love spending $4.00 in gas to buy 35 cents worth of hardware. (they are about $3.00 in gas closer than any place else with a decent hardware isle).

That sounds like what I had on my 04 FX4 with the 6.5 foot bed. My 06 XLT 5.5 foot bed has the bushing in the center hole for the pivot post to thread into.

make sure you have either a lock washer or a nylock nut.

if you are having trouble holding the nut to get it started put a glove on and glue the nut to your finger
