Strange motor sound

Hello all.

I have a 2004 Lariat Super Crew with the 5.4 2wd. The wife has been driving this truck for the past year or two. I got in it the other day, and as we were driving down the road, it sounded like I had some mud tires, that sound that big blocky tires make when they go down the road. This only happens, or only is noticeable when doing around 50-60 at a constant speed.

I thought it was the tires, so I had them rotated and balanced. Issue was still there. Thinking that they were bearings, I took it back to the shop. They went for a ride with me to hear the noise. When we were doing about 60, we shifted the truck to neutral, but it still was making the noise. We then turned the motor off, and the sound when away. Now I am thinking motor.

The truck, from day one has always sounded like a diesel. I have asked the service writer about this quite often. His response was that this is the way the new 5.4's are. So, now that the truck is out of warranty, I had taken it back to get a window regulator fixed. When they pulled it around to the service drive after fixing it, they left it running, and he tells me that the Camshaft Position Sensors are bad, that is why my truck is making this noise when idling.

Does anyone have any experience with their trucks with the sound that I described? And or any symptoms that a Camshaft Position Sensor would make?

Thanks
