Few questions for jrb03

jrb03,

Great info, I sent my factory nav radio out to someone who puts a video input for backup camera on it. I am going to follow your lead and use the stock handle mounted camera. I have a few questions.

1. How long is the harness that comes with the camera?

2. Are the distance lines that show up in your pics part of the cameras programming or is that part of the d3.

3. I know the image must be reversed to look proper in the screen, Is the image reversed in the ford camera or is it reversed in the d3

Im sorry if I didnt make it clear in my original post, I have an 08 that came with the backup cam system already installed. Labman, who has also posted in this thread, installed the complete system himself and can better answer question #1. I only tapped into the video and reverse wires to show the video on my D3.

The distance lines are put out from the camera, I have them on my mirror and D3 reverse signal, and are actually very helpful!

I believe the image is reversed from the ford camera. I tapped into the video signal and it displays exactly as it does on the rearview mirror. I did not have to change any settings on the D3.

Did we ever figure out where to get the 2 retainer clips to hold the OEM camera to the handle?

nothing to really worry about. i just took the handle to the dealer and we searched his bin to find the 2 i needed. they are lil washer like things with teeth on the inside to grip the plastic post they slide over. the dealer just gave them to me, even though i didnt order the parts there, but i dont think he knew that.....

that sucks about the clips, I hate going to the stealership. I'll figure something out. I will be getting the cam tomorrow, but am waiting for my vacation time in two weeks to install. I forgot to ask one more thing before I get ready to install, should I use sheilded wire or can I just use regular wire to the cab from the tail? I got the tailgate harness but that is all. i need to figure out a waterproof disconnect at the gate.

Run the wire in loom and then tape it with electrical tape. You can follow the factory loom already going to the back of the truck, come out of the cab from the factory grommet in the drivers side sill plate. Here is the link from my back up light install..but same basic concept for running the wire.

I too have an 08 Lariat in search for the proper harness(s) Is there an available harness to plug in the camera at the rear of the truck? I can't find one.

I also have an 08 Larait and recently bought the mirror and rear logo camera. I too need to get the harnesses. I spoke to a Ford parts man who told me that there are many harnesses and he didn't know if any of them would work. I'm going to take the stuff to him at the dealer to see which, if any will apply. Can you provde any info? Thanks.

Does anyone have the correct part #'s for the factory camera, tailgate harness, and tailgate handle to mount camera.

I would like to use the OEM camera setup, I like the way it is mounted, and that it has the lines in the camera for lining up your hitch. If it's not too expensive, it could be a viable option for a backup camera with an aftermarket HU.

Basically, you will need 3 parts if you want the complete OEM system found in the 08. The tailgate handle with the hole for the camera, the camera, and the mirror with the monitor built in. I have read that the mirror is pretty expensive, so if you have an aftermarket HU that can display the cam that would save alot.
The basic textured black one like the stock one is 8L3Z9943400AC and the textured Black handle with the chrome pull (lariat edition) is 8L3Z9943400AD they are also available as the MarkLt handles painted with the chrome pull, the camera is a separate piece.

Camera Part number is 8L3Z19G490A

More info can be found on this site be searching.
