Gas guage question
same problem on an 05, power cycling 3 times doesnt work
are there any other solutions besides the 3x on/off of the ignition? and is that just turning to on position and then off 3x? i tried it fast and then slow letting the doors lock and light come on automatically and fully, thanks for any help. this is the first time its happened to me i have 30k miles on my truck, and when i filled up, the key was in the ignition but not in the 'on' position, thanks again.

Before you start to fill up, take the key completely out of the ignition. The computer chip, embedded in the key, is still sending signals to the computer, which is confusing the silly computer.
Every since I posted this, I always take the key out of the ignition before I start filling up and when I am done and then start the truck, no problems.
I have talked with a few Ford technicians about this and they have admitted that yes, it IS a design flaw that Ford plans to do nothing about.
Hope that helps!

I don't think it was a design flaw, more likely it was intentional. My wife's old 03 escape did it, her 05 explorer, her 08 fusion, my old 05 fx4 and my 07 FX4 does it. SInce this occurs across the entire product line, I would guess that the engineers designed it that way. Just take the key out whenever you fill up and you have no problem.
Happened to me quite a few times but it turns out my issue was the gas. Apparently my city has some of the worst gas in the province for some reason and my local Ford dealership said they hear about it all the time. Especially if you use Husky/Mohawk gas because of the amount of Sulpher in it.
My dealership used to buy Techron bulk from Chevron and give it to customers when they came in with that problem. Eventually they replaced my fuel sending unit and now every few fillups I make sure I go to Chevron even though it's out of my way. Hasn't happened since.

Mine does it to. Except a little different. Sometimes it will be on empty for the whole tank and sometimes it will read. But it will read wrong. I know Im going to have to change to sending unit but im not real excited about that.
My parents pontiac does the same thing, It started doing it after they started blending ethanol in the gas. I think that is the cause of their problem because if they buy real gas without the 10% ethanol the gauge works fine. That 10% ethanol gas is crap, Real unblended gas is getting almost impossible to find here in Oklahoma!!
This has happened to me a few times before in my 07 F-150 and I will re-iterate what others have said......take your key out of the ignition when you fill up. Not just off, but actually right out of the ignition.
