5w-30 AMS-Oil in a 5.4

I used to run the 5w-20 MOBIL 1 but would now like to switch to AMS-Oil in my new truck. They only make 5-30 or 10-30....no 5w-20.

Is this a big problem or no big deal??

Stick with the 5w-20!..........plain & simple! That is what is called for in the Owners Manual........it does not get any more simpler than that!.....

If you live in a hot climate or have hot summer months than go for it. You'll be fine.

I personaly would stick with what you are running now. The AMS-Oil is a thicker oil and you engine will run hotter and it will put more strain on your motor.

Look at their website, it recommends either the 5W-20 XL or the 0W-20 for Ford trucks with the 4.2 or 5.4 engine. I've run both with great results.

Im due for an oil change and I live in AZ it will be 100+ for the next 6 months now and Ive though about going to a little thicker oil becuse in late summer we are 112+ for like 2 months and that has to be hard on such a thin oil. What do you guys say stick to 5 20 or should I bump it up to 5 30 for the super hot long summer?

If you want to use the best stuff Amsoil makes, use the 0W30 Signature Series. Next best is the 0W20 100% Synthetic. The 5W20XL is not a true synthetic, it's a Gp3 dino base, very similar to Mobil 1. Any of those 3 should be fine in any climate.

Thanks for the replies.

I think i will order the 0w-20 signiture series. I liked the Mobil 1, but its not even close to AMS-Oil in all the testing.....it is second amoung all the oils, but the AMS-Oil is good stuff.

I have it in 3 charter boats, snowmobiles, motorcycle, and want it in my truck

i used ow30 till the 0w20 became available then switched-i change oil once a year-use ea amsoil filters, and get yearly analysis from blackstone labs-100+k miles -zero issues!

Signature Series is 0W30, not 0W20. The only 0W20 is the one under it - 100% Synthetic.

I'm using Mobil 1 EP 5W20 right now and I'm happy with it. I do feel that Amsoil Signature and 100% is better though.

If you can keep it clean, it will in fact last 25k or 1 year. Treat your truck like you want, but extended intervals are in fact possible. I run my Mobil 1 EP 10k or 6 months.

Guess I should start draining my oil every six months, give it a wash job, "clean" it up and pump it back into my crankcase. Hell, might go 50,000 miles. It's amazing what people believe in what they read. I do think it would last 1 year however, but the mileage is to much for me.

If you did some research, you wouldn't flip it off so quickly. As I said, treat your truck the way you want and is comfortable for you.

I have run Amsoil over 60k with a bypass filter, and it still passes used oil analysis.
