BTW- we got 7k for our trade-in of our '04... traded it in for the '99 F-150 in 2007... right before the new ones came out.

MPG on 150...15 avg

Lets say you drive 25000 miles per year:

Aveo...834 gallons of gas per year
F150...1666 gallons of gas per year

Cost per year in gas:

Aveo...834*4.20 = $3502
F150...1666*$4.20 = $6997

So thats roughly a $3500 (probably overestimated) savings. With interest you are (probably) paying on the new vehicle, tax, tags each year, it will take almost 3 years to start making any money - do Aveos last that long? This is also not factoring in insurance, maintenance, or hazards that may occur on the new vehicle. This is also assuming that you NEVER drive the F150 anymore.

As I said, the numbers are very conservative. I am betting the 150 might get a bit better mileage and most people drive less than 25k per year. Note that I said MOST, not all of you. I even inflated the gas by $.30 (for my region).

If you bought this vehicle for economical reasons, you may want to see if your dealership will take it back. If you bought it because you wanted an ugly (just my opinion), underpowered, 4banger, with a 5 speed, that gets good gas mileage, then you did well.

 

Good analysis, but you are assuming that gas prices will stay at the 4-dollar range for the next three years. Most people at least where I live are being proactive and buying efficient small cars in case we start paying what Europeans are already paying for gas ($7-$9 a gallon).

We are lucky we are only paying 4 dollars a gallon. Everyone needs a truck, but there is a limit to what an average Joe will be willing to pay at the gas pump to fuel their trucks. For some truck owners who are keeping their beloved truck, buying a good used small car is a good option to not go broke.

I have a pretty funny Aveo story.

About a week ago I had to bring my truck in for a couple days to get some scratches that were on the hood when I bought it, buffed out.

The Enterprise guy came to pick me up. As we're walking out there was a new Mustang sitting outside and I thought that might be the rental I'd get for the next couple days. It wasn't. Then we passed by a new Tahoe, F-150, and an old Ranger (all of which I thought were going to be the rental I was getting) until he says "We're right here in the yellow Aveo". HA!

We go back to the rental place and he starts doing the paperwork and I finally ask, "am I really getting the bright yellow Aveo?".
His response, "is that a problem"
Me, "Well I'd rather drive anything else you have in stock"
His manager looks over at me slightly annoyed and insulted by my comments and tells me, "well it gets really good gas mileage".
As if I care, I just bought a brand new truck, I'm not too worried about gas mileage. Apparently it was all they had in stock, so I was stuck with it. I'm glad I did though. It was fun experience. I pretty much laughed the whole time I was driving it, partly because I decided to make go-carting sounds the whole time.

Anyway, I thought it was the funniest looking car in the world. My brother was sitting on the porch when I came driving up and he laughed for good ten minutes after seeing me because I barely fit in the car (although it was a four door!!!!). Good times.

I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy something like that even if gas was 7.00g. I would push my truck before that would ever happen.

you can still laugh all you want yellow stx, but you could have gotten something so much better and still get the same mileage or better than that ****box. Such as an altima, an altima hybrid, an escape hybrid, nissan sentra, ford focus. They all get 30+ MPG but they dont look as hideous as nemo there.

ya he could have got an altima, and excape hybrid if he wanted to spend another 20 thousand dollars. And the nissan sentra and focus are another 5,000 or so. He got the car because it was inexpensive. He has a warranty that will protect him for the next 100,000 mi. He bought a cheap car and doesn't have to worry about it for several years. Although with looks like that i would have just gone ahead and got a used prius.

I drive 25k a year and my 32 mpg accord isn't cutting it any more. It costs me $68 just to fill that up. This sucks
