regear ques?
I was just wanting to kow what the real gain is with regearing? By changing the gearing in the diffs will I sacrifice MPG on the Highway as opposed to keeping the stockers in and the lower RPMs at hwy speeds? I am just wanting to know. I am wanting to regear for my 35's from a 3.73 to a 4.56 and when I get new tires I will be getting the new BFG M/Ts in the 37. Will the $1,500.00 (tax refund) I am going to end up spending be worth it in the long run? I do a good mixture of both city/ HWY driving. What I am really wanting know is will I see a real improvement over the stock gears in both performance and MPG?
I went to 35's and 4.56 gears and my gas mileage went up since the truck didn't have to work as hard to turn the tires. Plus the performance is just like it was before the big tires, if not better. Now I can't give real numbers as I just can tell it works much better with the proper gears installed. Worth it, I don't know about that. It's all depending on what you really need. If the 3.73 work for you then stick with it and get something else. if you go to 37's then I would get the 4.56 or lower gears.
I agree with everything impact just mentioned. Understand that although your highway mpg's are awesome due to the low rpm's, your engine is running way out of its powerband. It you encounter a hill or tow, your transmission is constantly shifting trying to find the right gear due to the strain being placed on it. Depending on your situation, you may be ok. I will tell you that i had 35's with 3.73's, got 4.88's ( planning for 37/38's) and WOW!! Its a whole new world. City mpgs are back to stock. highway mpgs stink, but i drive more city. Just highway on weekends.
