Engine Break-In

I've gotten varying stories regarding this and want to see what yall have to say. I'm looking at upgrading from my 2003 F150 4.6 2WD to a 2008 F150 5.4 4WD. Most of my driving is in town, and I get about 14MPG. I'm currently test-driving my potential buy and the dash readout is averaging 12.5. I've been told that I should expect that to increase once the engine is broken in. What do you think? For me I NEED a truck, not WANT one, so I feel I have a little room to complain about MPG

Thanks.

Once it breaks in you will get better fuel mileage, also once you get out of the winter fuel it should pick up also.
