You'll be fine as long as you don't buy 85, 85.5, or 86 octane fuel and then head down to sea level on the same tank.
Well, I ran through that tank of 86... no difference in power, fuel consumption... or anything.
I filled it happily up with 87 and all was good.

Im not sure what your altitude is, but if its higher then it is perfectley fine to run 86 octane usually.
The higher the octane number the more resistant to detonation the gas is-thats all the octane rating on gasoline means. At a higher altitude your packing less oxygen into the cylinders compared to at a lower altitude, so detonation or preignition is harder to come by due to lower pressure inside the combustion chamber.
If his altitude is high enough (which if they are selling 86 at gas stations around there, it probably is) then there is no problem with trying 86 octane. If he did experience pinging then he would definatley want to use a higher octane gas then. But, if he didnt get any detonation, then what is everyone fussing about?

I know if you go somewhat south of me, there are some pretty high areas... so I'd assume that is what this is for. Never really need to go over there though.
But like I said, I popped through that tank and not one sly of a different action on the engine. All was good.
I just wanted to see what would happen... nothing happened... so... there's nothing to really discuss.
