Its time for me to move on from my 05 FX4 SuperCrew.

I've been trying to sell it privately so I don't get ripped off with trade-in. But have had no luck. It's been up on ebay, craigslist (for a few weeks), and recently on Autotrader.com with no real leads.

To put a frame of reference on it, the KBB value for trade-in is just over $20k, and the prive party is over $23k (its got less than 30k mi, and pretty much loaded).

Am I being overly optimistic by asking between trade-in and private party? Is the gas crunch really driving the price down? How low should I expect to go?...if private party is bad, how bad is the dealer going to jack me?

I think it's a combo between low fuel MPG and a huge number of these on the market just from the mass quantity made.

You're going to be raped for sure. Are you selling because you have to for financial reasons? If not, maybe you should hold onto it for a year or two.

Just a thought.

 

You reside in the same are i do, San Jose, and I'm in Palo Alto. The gas prices here are ridiculous, even compared to the rest of the country. It could easily have an affect on your sale attempt.

Average Californians are also retarded. Keep that in mind.

 

New 08s are going for around $30,000, yes, you are over priced. If average miles, I would guess around $18,000.

Just to clarify, 18k for private party? I'm not sure how average my miles are (less than 30k).
I was told that trade-in offers are usually around 2k less than KBB trade in value. Anyone else have a better (more accurate) rule of thumb?

BTW, I also have it posted on the F150Online classifieds, and no bites here, either.

I have never had high expectations when selling a vehicle. They aren't called the worst investment for no reason...

 

The days are gone when people would buy a truck just to have one. With the price of fuel creeping upward, people are putting more thought into their purchases and choosing vehicles that better suit their needs.

That being said, asking between trade and book value, with your low mileage sounds about right. If somebody needs a truck they will buy one, it's just going to take longer then you planned to find that person.

 

Yeah, I have basically decided the only way I won't loose big time is to keep this truck for as long as I can. Anytime I get an itch to sell it I am going to do a mod.

 

I have a very nice, clean XLT with 65,000 miles and if I went to trade in, I would expect them to start at about 12,000 and maybe go to 14,000 depending on what I was buying. I love my truck, and that is one of the reasons I plan to keep driving it.

 

Not to mention that all that nice stuff most of us do to our trucks, body kits, side steps, tonneau covers, LineX to name a few, only benefits the dealer when they resell it.

 

Yes, and the very well maintained truck with a maintence record, the near perfect paint, and spotless interior. They benefit from it all.

 

 

This is why I will sell my F150 myself when the time comes. Most people trade because it's easier, just drop your old vehicle off and drive away in the new one. The dealer might give me 12-14K for my '04 and then resell it for 16-17K. So not only did they make money on the new truck I bought, they also made money on the old one I gave them.

I'll bet there aren't too many people that think of it like that!

 

Even tho gas prices are climbing i'd say just keep it cause your never gonna get out of it what you want plus what you have done to it.
