The cable linkage to your tranny might have gotten messed up. I'd check that first.

Reverse is always mechanical, meaning if the transmission is electronically dead you'll always have at least one forward gear and reverse. No reverse means you've got something physically broken...shift linkage, manual valve in the trans, servo, clutch drum/pack, something's broke.

there was no grinding or sounds to make me think it was mechanical. I was driving in about 2 ft of snow..

btw I like your name . I am a die hard manual tranny guy.. unfortionatly now only my car is a manual (2006 fusion). and this situation only reminds me how much more dependable the manual is.

Ya... thanks. First good comment I've heard in a long time. I dunno... I think it's lazyness in what people drives them to hate manual trannies. Just like the people that ride my butt in traffic... they hate when I shift because I shift slowly to keep the wear off the synchros. I'm as **** as heck with my truck. I want it to last a very long time. People riding my butt will see me accelerate, then stop accelerating as I shift and the slam on their brakes almost rearending me... then they pass me and give me an ugly look! And I shake my head and think, "If they only knew the real way to drive..." Gosh, I save so much gas... it's funny. A 6000 lb truck getting a consistant 22 mpg. That's amazing. That's standard shift baby!

Now back to the real problem...

The shift linkage is attached to the transmission housing. When driving through the snow, it might have jarred it. You will see a cable (similar to that of a wire in cable for a lawn mower throttle cable)... that is the one. I think there is some kind of ratcheting type screw on it. I don't own an F150 automatic, obviously... never did... but on my previous automatic Escape with a CD4e had a similar device.

You have the 4.2 V6 right? I believe that has more to do with your MPG numbers then anything else.

Hey no complaints here... I love getting great gas mileage and showing it off.

I'll take the extra HP/torque of my 5.4 plus the ability to mash the throttle and get an automatic downshift when I want to pass on the highway. Once I'm done I let up on the throttle, it shifts back to OD and I'm back to 20 MPG. I'll sacrifice some mileage for the extra power and to not have to manually shift for every maneuver on the road.

I had a tranny go out on me once and reverse was the first gear to go.I continued to drive it for a few days and the forward gears eventually started slipping.
In other instances I've also had the forward gears go out on me first.
