A little progress, and a long way to go

I wanted to start a build-up thread for my 2006 F150 XLT Super Cab 4x4. The truck is in good overall condition, and has almost 40,000 miles on the clock. So far, so good with reliability and owner satisfaction. I just wanted to bring everybody up to date, and we can go from here.

Currently installed:
ProComp Stage-1 6" lift
ProComp model 1079 17x9" alloy wheels
ProComp 35x12.50-R17 Mud Terrains
AMP Resaerch retractable running boards
Ford drop-in bedliner
Generic and ugly billet grill overlay (it was free, and is temporary)

Parts on order:
Custom VMP tuned SCT xcal-3
Scangauge II and blend mount

The next phase of the truck's build will be happening as soon as I get my tax return money, and will include re-gearing the differentials with either 4.56 or 4.88 gears and an Eaton Posi out back with an Eaton e-locker up front. I am back and forth between the gear ratios, but 4.88s are winning at the moment.

So, what gear ratio do you recommend?
4.56 or 4.88

Which brand of gears?

Purely from running calculations, I think 4.56 is a good 35inch tire/gear combo.

Sounds like a sweet ride. I see your going to lock both ends, do you offroad often?

Often enough to want traction when I do. I went with an LSD in the rear, because it should be illegal to own a pickup that has an open rear differential, as for the front, the ability to lock in would help out a lot in bad situations.

I will try to get some pictures up when I get home from work, but there are a few of them floating around my gallery for the time being.

Orders placed
It looks as if the Scangauge 2 has shipped out and should be here in a few days; while VMP is working on my custom tuned xcal-3. I went with the 87-mileage, 91-towing and 91-performance tunes, and made sure to mention the Magnaflow #16616 exhuast system that will be on the truck.

A little about me
Hopefully some of my co-workers will come back to work... this 84 hours per week is getting old. I am getting one day off every other week!!! Once things are back to normal here, and I can have some free time, I plan to do a nice detail of the truck and try to get some pictures for everybody (though I am not a photographer by any means).

The differentials
I am almost settled on 4.88s now. I am up in the air about how much more up in the air I would like to be (i.e I want to lift the truck more, but not too sure how much). I think I will eventually be running 36-37" tires, and would like the 4.88s to turn those.

The Magnflow is on, and sounds great.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow, but I am definitley likeing the SIDO side exit. It has a deep, mellow tone and very little cab noise at speed. On the throttle it sounds nice.

After I get my tuner/tunes, and the Scangauge2 I am saving up some more for the re-gear.

sorry i didnt post sooner, but about the gears. if your gonna run anything bigger than 35s in the future get 4.88s. precision and yukons tend to be the best with yukons being the number one choice. make sure you get a mag hytec cover as well. welcome to the pro comp family, man u went all pro compd out too!!!

I can't lie, the ProComp stuff is cost-effective. As of for the rims and tires, I wanted something functional and simple... hence the 17" rim and Mud Terrains. From past experiences, and the experiences of other locals, the ProComp mud tire is a great choice, and tends to work better than most other mud tires out there (save for the xtreme terrain tires and such). The shop gave me a good package deal on the ProComp rims and tires, and the lift was a great price (think $1,200 good ).

All in all, I am quite happy with ProComp so far... I am going to be adding coil-overs to the front, but I think mine will be King or Fox, along with new rear leaf springs and remote res. shocks. I want the rear to be a little higher than the front, and I want to do so using only the factory block (no stacked block non-sense, or 5" block stuff)... so new rear leafs will be added sometime, along with the custom coil-over setup.

Next on the list after the tuner and scangauge are installed is to re-gear the beast, and put my Eaton Posi in the rear, and an Eaton e-Locker in the front. Sill not sure if I am going 4.56 or 4.88. Why is the decision so hard?

Also, why Yukon over Preceison?

If you offroad some like you say, one of my priority mods would be coilover shocks. Those procomp spacers are nasty.

if you ever want to run 37s, get 4.88s, if you just wanna run 35s forever, get 4.56s. Yukons, from what i know, tend to be a better quality and have a better name. When i think the best, i think yukons. just my opinion, but thats what im getting soon though.

Good to know.

I am not sure yet if I will ever run 37s, otherwise my choice would be easy... I think I will get 4.88s anyhow, and go from there.

I agree with that, I am looking to do coilovers up front after the re-gear is done. I'll probably go with King or Fox coil-overs, and re-do the rear suspension as well with new leaf springs.
