Starter overunning

This will be hard to explain but once in a while when I cold start the truck it seems like the starter continues to run after the key is released. I am not sure it is the starter though because I have heard starters overrun before and it does not sound like this. The engine has a load roar that lasts for about 2 seconds and then it returns to a normal quiet idle. It is a 2006 5.4 with 17,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated, it is very hard to duplicate so a trip to the dealer is a waste of time.

It's not the starter, it's the fan clutch. Mine does the same thing once in awhile. When the fan sits still the oil inside will collect at the lowest point causing the valve inside to engage the clutch. When you start it, the fan spins with the engine until the oil redistributes itself and disengages the clutch.

Ever drive an older Jeep Cherokee? When you start up one of those and drive off, it sounds like a jet turbine...

But my F150 is just a loud when I go through parking lots in 1st gear at 1500 rpms... people think it's a big rig coming through...
