Unhappy IWE for the 4th time

Well I've had the IWE solenoid replaced 3 times in about the first year and a half of ownership. The third time was supposed to be the redesigned one so that water/moister could not get in. Well that was almost a year ago to the tee and no problems since, well that is until yesterday. Driving down the road like normal then all of a sudden the familiar grinding came back. The only difference this time is when I slowed down to pull off the road it was trying to grab the gears in the wheel end and causing the truck to jerk. The jerking only lasted for a little bit until there was a loud clunk and it felt like the front of the truck came a part, then all was normal again. Since it is snowy I check the 4wd and everything is working as normal now.

This is just frustrating that this the 4th damn time of having problems with the IWE's. After doing some searching on here that even some of the 07's are doing this stuff. Why is it that in 3yrs since this truck style has came out that have not fixed this issue.

Sorry for the little rant, I guess I'll be taking the truck back to the dealer next weekend to get this fixed. I'm going to try and get them to just not replace the solenoid but the IWE's too since it has done this grinding 6 or 7 times on the same hubs, they have got to be getting damaged.

I have heard of cases popping up here and there, but nothing like yours. Sounds like you just have really really bad luck or something else is to contributing to the failure. Maybe the instillation isnt dont properly

have them check the teeth on the hubs (iwe's) like you said, and then have them vacuum test them as well. This is rediculous. I'd be pretty confident your hubs have sustained damage.

The truck is going in on Monday when I get off work. The dealer is being pretty good about it they offered to give me a loaner while they take a look at it since it is the 4th time. This pretty good for this dealer cause usually they won't ever consider a loaner unless the truck has to stay overnight.

Anyway the only thing I noticed this time versus the rest of the time is that it started to grind when I was giving a little more gas than normal, although probably only 1/2 throttle. Would this have any effect....possibly losing vacum?? I hope they don't try to blame it on the leveling kit, since the other 3 times the truck was completly stock.

Once I get this fixed I'm debating on selling it and trying my luck with an left over 07 since this truck has had soo many problems although most of them have just been minor things...it just gets fustrating going to the dealer every few months. I'll probably just keep it though since I plan on having it payed off this year and I'm tired of having car payments.

IWE = integrated wheel ends. The front hubs actually lock in and out for 4wd unlike most of the other new trucks out. The default posistion is locked in when there is no vacum present(such as engine off). Once vacum is present they unlock, until till you put the truck in 4wd then I assume the solenoid cuts off the vacum to let them lock in.(could be wrong on the last part on how they lock in. But either way these hubs get a work out, everytime you shut off the truck they lock in and unlock when started.

They probaly replaced the solenoid, there is a redesigned one that came out last year or so, cause the original could let water in and cause it to goo bad. I went through two of the old design and in Jan 07 they put the new redesigned one in. No problems until now so I'm leaning towards that I have a bad IWE this time instead of the solenoind.

Just an update. The dealer said they are replacing the solenoid yet again. Last time it was replaced, In January 2007 it was supposed to be the updated one that prevents water from getting in. Now they say there is another updated module that they are going to use this time....Can anyone verify this or is the dealer just pulling my leg?

Also they are not going to replace the wheel ends, they said they looked them over and did not find any damage. This does not make me happy cause there has to be some kinda damage after all the grinding, clunking and grabbing they have done. I guess I'll have to see if it has any long lasting affects. They are going to different dealer now to pick up the module so I should have my truck back today.
