Turning front axles

Today i was at a light and another lifted f1 turned in front of me and as he turned his front axles cough my eye they were turning. Our axles dont turn with the front wheels when in 2wd right, that would mean he was driving in downtown tempe in 4wd???

on 04+ they only turn in 4wd unless there is a bad IWE, or solenoid.

That sucks, his front axles coughed in your eye.

As far as I know, they only turn while the 4wd system is engaged.

If I am not mistaking, but unless you have locking hubs. Your axles will spin when your tires are turning.

They 100% should not spin as long as you don't have any vacuum leaks or a blown solenoid fuse (which is common). The solenoid could also be faulty which is also common.

Josiah I am not saying you are wrong but can you describe how the vacuum holes work. How does it disconnect the axle from the hubs.

I believe it's backwards from most vehicles. The vacuum hoses have constant vacuum when in 2WD and than no vacuum in 4WD. Correct Josiah?

yeah it's a fail safe feature so you're not SOL if your solenoid fails while offroad. By default your hubs are locked. There is a sleeve with internal gear teeth that locks into place for 4wd and slides back when vacuum is present (which happens at the turn of the key), if there is a leak or the solenoid fails the vacuum is not present and that sleeve locks. Sometimes my hub would fail and I thought I'd need a new hub until I pulled it apart and reseated the sleeve. This is a good feature for gas mileage reasons but at the same time just adds to the likelihood of something going wrong.

Either that OR he has some real bad **** transfer case, giving him control of front wheel drive or rear wheel drive (atlas three speed) Doubtful but always a posibility.

yes I have had numerous problems with the integrated wheel hub . I have now replaced 4. if you only get partial vacuum then you drive down the road with the hubs partially engaged and wear down the teeth. problem is you never know it till you need it.

also acording to ford it saves .5 gallons a mile not rotating the axles.. i believe chevy and dodge rotate the axles all the time.
