cables on a 4x4 for the snow?

I will be going to the snow this weekend in southern CA, but on there website it says you might need chains. I know our manual states not to put chains, instead to use cables. Do you need cables with a 4x4 on about 6" of snow? Are you even supposed to use cables on a 4x4? I have a 2007 FX4 with the perilli 20" stock tires on.

Last week we had about 3" of snow. It was wet snow and slicker than snot. While I don't think the Pirelli's do very well in the snow (in comparison to BFG AT's on my other truck) they did okay. IMHO if you are in 6" of cold powder or packed snow you would be fine.
If it is icy that is another story...
Just be careful and have fun.

According to Tire Rack the stock Pirelli's are rated very good all around including snow.

I find what Tire Rack says very hard to believe! If damp not soaking wet grass can be a problem for the Scorpions. I am not looking forward to the Snow in the mountains of WV the end of the month. My Expy with Mich LTX M/S were great. I have yet to get my F150 into snow. Only time will tell.

assuming your tires aren't bald...

you would need over 12" of snow to get the FX4 stuck. (also assuming you aren't going off-roading...)

We've gotten tons of snow here this winter and I've had no issues. I don't have any weight in the bed, so I put it in 4WD.

So if you are just worried about snow on the roads, don't be. But do be sure to take it slow at first till you get used to the handling in snow (assuming this is the first time you've driven in snow, being in Southern Cal). If you are in 2WD, your back end will slide out real quick on even the slowest of accelerations. And in 4WD in the snow, its not too hard to get it to do a 4-wheel slide by stomping on the accelerator.

Have fun

I have an '06 FX4 and have had the BFGs, Goodyears, Pirellis.

BFGs SUCK. P tire should not be on a truck. ****ty traction all around, the worst tire out of the bunch.

Goodyears were OK in the snow, louder than the BFGs, wet traction sucked, especially from take off.

Pirellis, they blow my mind everytime i drive. They do flat spot in cold weather overnight, but quickly get back in 1-2miles. I feel so much more comfortable driving and plan to get them again in a larger size.

^^He may not like 'em but I love the BFGs. But seriously, are you out in the country where 6 inches just sits there? If it's new, you should be fine. Couple day old snow in still freezing weather SUCKS donkey testes.

All those were OEM tires and rims. BFG Ruggedtrails is what i was comparing.
