Running Rich
Running Rich
My truck has been throwing po172 - po175 (running rich in both banks) codes since I installed my CAI. If I reset the battery and drive with a heavy pedel it wont trip again. But if I easy foot it, then the light will turn back on. I have already cleaned my MAF sensor and everything is installed right. I have a AEM brute force CAI. Before the CAI was installed it ran fine, but why is it running rich with it. Shouldnt it cause it to run lean?
I am getting the same codes, I have the Air Force one Intake 3.5 with custom Troyer tuned Xcal 2 though, and a straight piped exhaust.
Anyone know what you can do to get rid of the codes?

If you are getting the codes with a custom tune, call and tell troyer your problem they should have programed for it. Did you purchase the tunes before or after the CAI? I am going to get a xcal3 eventually, but as for now I would just like my truck to run correctly. AEM says nothing about requiring after market tunes for the CAI to work correctly.

Not really straight pipes per say, its just no muffler. Its just tubing after Y-pipe to the tip.
I called Troyer and asked them about it, and they said to disconnect the battery and let it re set, but it keeps coming back. So then they said to data log with the tuner and send it to them, so I have to do that.
I installed the tunes and CAI on the same day cause you have to with the 3.5 air force one. It was fine for about 4 months or so, but started acting up around fall time.

First things first, check your CAI for leaks. Double check and tighten all your connections for the CAI.
Next, disconnect your battery and clean your MAF with MAF cleaner. Put MAF back in and reconnect battery, then take the truck out for a test run. Drive it it bit hard for a while and see if you get the code again.
If it does show again, I'd wager that you two need new O2 sensors, but it could be a faulty injector which is overfueling one of the cylinders.

I don't think its a bad injector cause isn't that for the 05 F 150's, mine is a 2004. I will take out the MAF and try cleaning that, and then reset it. If that does not work I guess I will order some new 02 sensors. Does anyone know where I can find some good 02 sensors for our truck online?

BTW, when O2 sensors go bad they will richen up the mix, which will leave carbon deposits on the spark plugs - so you'll probably want to change the plugs also (that is if the O2 sensors are the problem).

My millage on a good day would be about 13mpg. And that is not letting it get above 2,000 RPM. Usually its around 12 or 12.5 if I am not trying to get good millage, and 11 something if cruising at 80 mph on the highway or aggressive city driving.
I think I could use some spark plugs, but pretty damn scarred to change those out with all the stories on here. But O2 sensors I think I might just go ahead and order those and see if those help.
I guess I am going to start searching for part numbers on O2's sensors and spark plugs for 04 F 150 unless anyone has those off the top of there head.
Also another thing, I have rough idle at start up with my truck. I dunno what that is a sign of, but if that helps anyone out in the diagnosis.

No man, I meant your overall mileage of the truck (ie how many miles on the odometer) - not gas mileage. That being said, damn - your gas mileage seems low. What gears do you have? Any lift or big tires?

Depending on the gears you two have, or if you have a lift or big tires - I'd say your gas mileage is quite low. I have 3.73's with a stock FX4 lift and stock tires, and I get 15-16 city and 18 highway. It seems that there is a real problem of running too rich with both of you, unless you have a lift/tires/4.56's. Considering your odometer, I'd say new 02 sensors and/or plugs are in order, and if not you guys should probably get your trucks checked out by a dealership.
