I have had my oil changed every 3000 miles at the dealer. It always had the ticking noise at start up and was loud at idle. I noticed recently that the truck doesn't do this anymore. No more knocking on start up and has seemed to got quieter during idle. I have not changed anything....still getting oil changed at the dealer. I have just over 50 000 miles on it and it is an 04.......5.4l...maybe it is getting broke in and everything is loosening up ....also I have never had any problems with it other than brakes

I call BS on this one. -40 deg C or F? Maybe if you have the thinnest possible dino made and its plugged in... perhaps, but even then there is no way your oil pressure neddle is swinging over as quick as it would with a 0/20 synthetic...

I agree with this being BS! -40 degrees would freeze up a regular dino oil like pouring Molasses..........that engine is makin some noise upon startup in that temperature with dino, or he needs to put a new battery in his hearing aid......

synthetic doesn't break down like convintional oil and I change my oil every 6k or 6 mths which ever comes 1st which is always the 6 mths cause I don't drive that many miles I have a 2005 w/ 19k miles on it I buy the cases of mobil 1 oil at Costco for $29 and a filter runs me another $5 so it runs me $70 bucks a year for oil changes

Its even colder here in MN. The last couple nights have been around -5 degrees with hights getting not much over 0. No problems starting up with regular motorcraft oil.

For $40.19 I change my oil every 3000 miles using Mobil 1 5w20 and the motorcraft filter.
Is this overkill? Maybe.
Do I care? No
Why? Because I feel that I should keep my truck in the best shape possible. Why not spend a little more money and know that my truck is protected by better oil. I think its worth a few more dollars to save me $$$$ in the long run.

Also, just remember, while the oil my be able to go over 10000+ miles...that doesnt mean that the oil filter should.

I hope that C or F question was a joke seeing as how it is the exact same temperature.

At -40 I do plug in the block heater. I don't care what oil you use, they get hard to start at those temps. Batteries don't seem to like those temps.

So have I from motorcycles to an older 1983 Powerking Tractor with a 2 cyl Kohler gas motor that still runs like new! Have you ever seen a motor ripped apart after 100,000mi run exclusively with Mobil-1? I have, it was clean, almost new looking......scarry! I can get a 5qt container of 5w20 Mobil-1 at Wallmart for $21.96 compared to a 5qt Container of Motorcraft Blend @ $10.36, not alot more money for the Synthetic...........

I run synthetic oil and ford filters, and I go overkill on the oil changes for a synthetic oil. I'm really considering going to Royal Purple for all my fluids, I haven't tried them yet, but I hear good things.

Yeah nothing likes -40, I'll second your BS. You probly couldn't even poor dino oil out of the can after its sat at -40 overnight, nevermind your engine make oil pressure with it right after start up.

And I've run dino oil in everything I have ever owned for the last 45 years and as you said-no problems so far. I've sold some of them with under 180,000 miles on them but I tracked 3 to about 250,000 miles and they were still running but the transmissions killed them in the end.

Ahh you caught it...

I'm not saying mine wouldn't start @ -40, it would 99% of the time, (especailly when my original battery died and I put in a real battery) but it wouldn't sound good at all. And might be a 1.5 second delay b4 oil guage wakes up... My biggest complaint is around teh whinning the Ford power steering pump makes... I finally flushed it and put in Royal Purple max-ex steering fliuid... Helped big time.
