Upper ball joint replacement/install?

I was getting the front end aligned today and it turns out my upper ball joints are worn. I am going to try and tackle the job myself. I can get the parts for about $75 a side from fordparts.com. What all am I going to need to do to get this job done? What needs to be done? All tips and hints and how-to's would be appreciated.

I would imagine just an impact wrench and some basic hand tools. I would also like to know if anything else is needed because I'll probably do the same job sometime later this year.

I agree. Mine are supposed to be on their way from Cap'n here sometime soon. If you do a lot of offroading you might want to look into the Camburg's or the Total Chaos Fab ones. If not, then just disregard this post!

I can get the stock control arms for 150, camburgs are going to cost around 350-400 right? If so I think I'll just stick with stock.

Haha..I wish they only cost that much. They will run you around 6-700 bucks brand new. But thanks to Cap'n I get to save a little bit

Really easy to do. Jack up truck from the frame. Take the wheel and tire off. Undo the bolt from upper ball joint and hit spindle with a hammer until the ball joint pops free. Unbolt the 2 bolts holding UCA to frame. Then reverse everything. Use a jack under the LCA to get the upper ball joint into position and hold the spindle and UCA tight to keep the ball joint from spinning while you tighten the nut. Then get it aligned. Maybe 1/2 hr per side.

You get really good at this after putting on leveling kit, removing kit, installing lift, wait a few months install shocks. I really should get me a pickle bar. Takes me longer to pull out the jack stands and tools.

Your going to probably need to remove your coilover to get the control arm bolts out. Not a big deal either.

Moog makes heavy duty ball joints for these trucks, and I have heard good things about them. Don't have personal experience with them, but they are an alternative to OEM joints.

even on my suspension that I went all out on. we retained the stock lower ball joint. I did rip the boot but you can now buy just the ball joint.
