I used to get 20-22 with the Escape... when hauling something, it would go down to like 15-18 mpg. It was not worth trading my '99 for.

Don't kid yourself. If he would have said he got anything else other than a Ford, the people on here would have thrown a fit.

it all depends on what engine you get. The v6 escape gets low 20s for mpg. Our 4-banger hybrid gets 29-30 consistently. I think on the last tank we got 31. When Ford says its the most fuel efficient SUV in America, they arent joking.

Man, you probably lost more money from the transaction of trading your truck and the quick depreciation of the new one than you would have with gas. I have finally learned that after trading 3-4 times. Every time you trade and buy new you ALWAYS LOOSE money.

But, if you are happy with your purchase and did some quick financial calculations then I am sure you will be okay.

That's undoubtedly true, but it sure is an easy decision to justify when you're in the showroom sitting behind the wheel of a new ride!

But to your point, assuming an average cost of fuel to be say $2.87/gal. If you go 25k miles a year you'll use 1471 gallons of gas at 17MPG. You'll use 962 gallons of gas at 26MPG.

17MPG Yearly Cost: $4222
26MPG Yearly Cost: $2761
Total Savings: $1461

So if over the life of the loan the NEW ride costs you less than $1461 a year more you're ahead, but not by much. If not, which is likely) it is costing you MORE money to drive the vehicle with better fuel ecomony. These numbers are crazy but back at $1.90gal it was even more drastic. And these numbers are at 25k miles a year, which is considerably more than the average driver drives.

Sorry to see you let go of the truck. But I totally understand. I need to jab a battery and other bits into our Focus and get it on the road to take the gas usage out of the truck except on weekends.

If you could have afforded it, a cheap, gas sipping work car is a great way to go... My '01 SL2 and '00 Focus do what the wife and I need during the week...

I didn't do it for the gas, but I just picked up a 97 Escort as a winter beater.

There are some terrible drivers in the area (more pronounced in the snow). They drive into people on the roads. Drive into parked cars, etc. So when I need to just bomb around I take the beater. I don't care if it gets in an accident, banged up in a parking lot or whatever.

It also gets 30mpg as a side benefit and only cost $1000 to buy.

I went from leasing my 06 Screw to leasing the new 08 Escape, so I didn't loose much. On the highway, I'm averaging around 24mpg with the 3.0L V6 4WD. This is a marked improvement over the 15mpg that I was averaging in my Screw. Now I just need to figure out what I can mod on the new Escape (can never leave a truck alone for too long).
