HELP! External temp is going haywire!

First off, Merry Christmas to all!

My external temperature reading has recently started going crazy. It reads anywhere from 40-80 degrees colder than actual. How do I get this fixed!?!? Problem is, it affects my electronic climate control. Could the sensor be dirty or something? Where is it located?

Also, may be unrelated, not sure. My console shifter lights went out. Is that just a fuse? The rest of the dash lights work fine. It's just dark where the PRND21 is.

I am over in England and I dn't have a code reader or anything. Hopefully these are easy fixes?

TIA

Have you tried reseting it? If i remember you drive in 3 complete circles going no faster than 5 or something like that. You can look it up in the owners manual.

I think the driving in circles thing only resets the compass. I checked the manual and there was no mention of how to reset the temperature guage. The most extreme temperature reading is -40 degrees F and the outside temp is around 35 F. So quite a bit off!

Anaheim, where is the sending unit located? I'm wondering if maybe the sensor is just dirty?

Fairly certain that the OAT sending unit/sensor is mounted forward of the radiator just behind the grille on the vertical radiator support.

Anyone have any ideas short of going in to get it checked? It's driving me crazy! When the temp reads -40 outside, my auto temp control blows straight hot air because it thinks it is way cold outside! The only thing I can do is turn it down to 60 so it only blows lukewarm air instead. Can't turn it off because my windows are all fogging up!
