We have all sorts of F150's @ work, and there doesn't "feel" like any improvements in performance were made between the years. Could just be differences in assembly plants or whatever.
My '04 is Smooth
I've driven an '04, '06, and '07 and every truck felt very different although they were all of the same body style configuration and all had 5.4's with 3.55 rear-ends.
Here's the really strange thing though. I ended up buying an '06 XLT Supercab with 6.5' bed, 5.4, and 3.55 rear-end (wish it had 3.73:1 rear gears) and test drove six different ones all basically identical aside from color and they all felt like totally different beast.
I'm not so sure it's so much the year it's produced that neccessarily makes them have such varying characteristics. I think that so many different things go into the onboard computers, engines parts, and the way they are put together, it's just damn near impossible to make two or more vehicles "feel" exactly the same.

ok, back on topic. the 4x4 rides 180 degrees of different from a 4x2. when test driving trucks, they should be in different catagories completely.
I can totally believe the 08's have more power than a 04/05. the PCM for most 04/05 are still stock and haven't been updated. the newer years have better fuel management and spark and a/f mixture setups

I get this awkward feeling like they designed it with only being equipped with an automatic.

I owned an 04 FX4 w/3.73 ls rear, 05 Lariat w/3.73 ls and and 06 FX4 w/3.73 ls. Also drove an 07 FX4 w/3.73 ls to work for the day when had the injectors replaced on the 06. ( buddy is the general manager at local ford dealer ) Power and handling stock feel the same, they are all gutless slugs with no midrange or upper rpm power on the stock tune. I would expect the 08 to be the same, I'm sure I'll take one for a spin some time.
I'm not at all interested in a 2 wd truck but for the 4x2 guys, dealer also has an 07 HD screw with the Saleen - 450 HP supercharged/intercooled/beefed up injectors - package.

Dont forget, changes have been made to these trucks throughout the years though. Just look at the exhausts...
The 04-05 trucks have 4 catalytic converters, whereas the 06+ have only 2.
The 07 and 08 models have modified exhaust systems that are meeting the new emissions standards. My dad's 08 sounds a hell of a lot different stock then my 04 did.

). It really howls when you get on it. As far as not believing how a stock truck would be putting down more power than an older modded one, I do believe it. As I said, my '08 is 100% stock. My buddy from work has an '07 FX4, also 100% stock. Both are x-cabs, 4x4, 5.4L, 3.55 rears. Only difference is his is limited slip, mine is open diff. And I have 18" 5 spokes, he has 20". I took him to work today and was screwing around and he was shocked. He said my truck has much more ***** than his, it felt MUCH quicker off the line, and 0-60 was quicker. I let him drive to see if it was in his head and after he was still amazed by my truck. We got back to his place and I drove his, it felt a little more sluggish. We then went out on the road with both trucks. Lined up at a light and on green we both went WOT. Needless to say I pulled hard on him, and by the time I reached 60, I was a good 2 lengths on him.Bottom line is I think I may have gotten the ever so evassive factory freak. I am more than happy with the performance. I'm more impressed that my stock truck will put me back in my seat hard. And I hear alot about people not being able to break the tires loose at all, but I have no problem lighting them up. I want to get to the 1/4 strip in Epping, NH before I do any mods just for giggles, but I am going to be doing the exhaust in a couple weeks, and intake and tuner in a month or so. Exhaust is going to be Maggie high flow cats, Y pipe cut off and replaced with 2.25 x pipe, 4x9 Maggie rounds, all done with 2.25 pipe. Should be a mean sounding setup
