How long did your stock shocks last?

I have a 2007 SCREW XLT w/ 12,500mi, & I just added factory Skid plates, cause I occasionally go off road up north on Hunting trips. How long did your stock shocks last? Did you notice any difference going with a different shock such as a Bilstein? The stockers seem to be adequate for now & ride nice on the pavement...........

Kind of a tough question because shocks degrade over time with use. So when are they "worn out?" They're probabably degraded enough after about 40,000 miles in most cases to warrant replacement. I replaced the ones in my '05 at 49,000 miles with a stock set with only 1,200 miles on them that I found in our classifieds. What a difference!

I figure when it's time for a replacement, I'll probably go with the Yellow Bilsteins.....I have heard good things about them!........

I have 60,000 on mine, and I know I need to replace them. Just haven't.

I've got 51K on mine and I need to replace them. Planning on Bilistein adjustables and a good alignment in January along with some other due services...

So even at 50,000 miles there was quite a noticeable difference after replacing them?

I just turned 100,000 miles on my 04 a few days ago. I had thought about replacing my shocks. They still seem to ride fine, but then again I am sure they don't compare to a new set. I guess I should probably look into replacing them.

Yup, noticed a huge difference. Remember too that I replaced mine with a set of the exact same (factory) shocks. Most everybody else replaces theirs with aftermarket shocks - which by definition have different valving. So, I replaced like with like and got to see the real difference. It really woke me up to how one can miss the slow degradation of performance. If you've got 100k on yours, get ready for a life (and ride & handling) changing experience.

Well I will definitely have to look into it then.

Is this an easy do it yourself job?

I guess that I am an idiot My shocks on my 00 F150 had 160k on them. My brother in law who is a tech at a garage checked mine by jumping on the rear render...they never bounced, so he said they were fine. Am I an idiot for listening to him? And did he have a clue as to what he was talking about?

I've noticed that the bed of my truck has started to hop a little more than it used to going over railroad tracks and washboard roads. I am pretty sure it is time for new shocks.

I replaced my rears @ 125,000M and my fronts @ 145,000M and the only real diff I notice is when I hit sharp bumps like train tracks that stick up too far... Otherwise I'm not sure there was a big diff..... That siad when I hit a real bad patch of washboards on agravel road, I'm sure I coudl handle higher speeds now. But day to day highway driving... not a big deal.
