4.56 Gears are in

Well picked up my truck last night after getting the new gears installed. I haven't really got to do too much driving since picking it up though. Went to the UH game last night and Sunday is football day. Big thing I immediately noticed was when I pushed the gas pedal the truck really seemed to jump from the line rather than just get up to speed and that was under light acceleration.

My speedo was way off though, going down the highway my truck was pushing 90 mph, but RPM's were under 2000. Put some 92 octane (highest they have in Hawaii) in the tank and installed the 92 performance tune and the speedo seems to be back to normal. Need to get out there and do some driving and see what the new gears really do for the truck. I can tell though that the power I lost with the lift and larger tires is going to be back with the new gears.

Here's a couple pics of the new cover I had put on. They didn't have the Mag Tech one or I would have went with that one.

So far you've provided great explanation of the feeling, keep us informed as I'm curious how much power you've gained back. Can't wait till you can get on it.

I'll keep you guys posted on that. The good thing is is I filled up the tank within 30 miles of getting the new gears. It'll take me a couple weeks to burn through this tank of gas, but I'll give you all the update. I also just ordered a new AF1 filter and cleaning kit so hopefully that'll help my mileage.

I wish it took me a couple of weeks to burn through a tank, I usually have to fill up every 3 to 4 days.

I'm lookin forward to hearing the update.

where did you get the work done? My F-150 is in a cargo ship right now for Oahu. I'd like to get some 4.30 or 4.56 gears for my truck. and some 4.10 gears for my car. I've heard horror stories about HI shops

oh yeah, why the new axle cover? can people behind you see it?

Got it done at a place called Maui Offroad in Pearl City not too far from the mall. They have a nice big shop and always seem pretty busy the few times I've been down there so I would guess they are pretty good at what they do. Also some very nice trucks sitting outside they have done work on. I live in Honolulu myself. Where are you planning on staying when you get over here?

I got the new cover because I liked the looks of it and I'm sure people in smaller cars (which are plentiful over here) can see it when they're behind me.

I take it then you'll be working at Naval Station Pearl Harbor then? I work on the PACFLT compound myself, I'm the CMC at the Maritime Forecasting Center (weather center).

Are you married and looking to get into base housing? I've been out here since the end of Sept (on shore duty as well) and my family and I actually live in Army housing. A little older then some of the newer Navy stuff, but none of that was available until sometime after the new year. If you are bringing family the most important thing to do is get checked into your new command as soon as you set foot on the island, that way your TLA starts immediately. If you wait and get a hotel room then you'll be funding it out of your own pocket until you check into your command.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if I can help you out in any way. I'm pretty new to the island myself, but if I can offer any assistance I'd be more than happy to do so.

Sorry to bring up and old thread but if you were to put 4:56's in and get 35" Toyo MT's would it kinda even out but still be a little quicker than stock? I think 4:30's may be a little slow with 35's. Go big or go home right? haha

I think now that I have the 4.56's in and 35's I'm pretty close back to stock if not a little quicker. I haven't really been able to get out on the highway though and really get on it. Trying to do that soon.

oh yeah, what did the parts/labor cost you? I've been quoted anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500 out here in Bangor for front/rear swap

How long you been in? I did six years and I never want to see a ship again. My wife can't even get me to take a Carribean cruise. I was a nuke ET and wish we had the re-up bonuses that the guys have now. I might change my mind about boats!

7 years and some change as a Nuke MM

twidgets are getting up to $90K on the first re-enlistment nowadays...want to know what is really sad though? we still have guys unwilling to add 2 more years for a bonus of $60k to $90k

life has gotten really bad really fast. Luckily I was stationed on a Boomer, so I got to miss the life of a Fast Boat.
