Ford will tell you that the transmission is filled for life. I think fluid and filters are cheaper than overhauls or replacement transmissions, and I service mine every 30K.

Had the dealer change filter and flush/refill mine at 30K....my owners manual said to do it at 30K....compared to a tranny rebuild $215 was quite cheap....

You might consider having Royal Purple Max ATF swapped in at the time of service. Supposed to help with longevity and efficiency... As soon as the big expense (wedding) is over for me, I am taking my truck in for a Royal Purple trans service...

I'm at 30k right now and plan on taking it in some time in the next 5-10k miles to have it flushed. Then I'll change the filter myself to save a little $.

Save yourself the time and don't change the filter. If the place who flushes your trans has a good machine, they will T into the external trans lines and backflush the entire system replacing all of the fluid without dropping the pan. The filter is just a metal screen and it gets cleaned when the machine flushes it out. That way you don't have to drop your pan and mess with potential leaks.

Also the owners manual does recommend it every 30k miles.
