Blue Smoke...

When i went outside today to start my truck and it poured two big clouds of blue smoke out of my dual exhaust. It probably pumped it out for about 3-4 seconds. I know its obviously burning oil, i dont notice anything while driving but it has done it once before on startup in the past i just never paid attention to it til now. The truck was sitting for 4 days without being started could that be the issue? its an 05 5.4 with 20500 on the clock.

Has anyone else experienced this?

If I go out when my truck is ice cold and start it up just to move it and then shut it back off without letting it warm up, then leave it sit for a while, the next time I start it it will puff out blue smoke. It is an 05 FX4 with 5.4 and has 43K on it, but it has done it since it was new. My brother's 02 FX4 with 5.4 does the same thing. Don't know why it does this but it really doesn't use any oil.

Blue smoke

I am going to tell you exactly what it is, the valve stems. You should insist they replace the valve stems, one for each cylinder. There must be a defect in the way the y engineered the 5.4 engine. I had a 1988 Firebird 350, did the same thing. I replaced the valve stems with gaskets from an American company called Fel-Pro, very durable long lasting. Your getting a tiny bit of oil in the engine, hence the blue smoke. If it is under warranty I would be jumping up and down!!! Replace it now or pay later,

mine does it too for a about a second occationaly and not much smoke just a haze. My firebird also does it everynow and again, usually more smoke than the truck though. I'm just keeping an eye on it if it starts to gets worse then I'll take it in. Heck my 89 ranger did it on every start up for 175k miles and no problems, If it didn't puff smoke on start up I was worried

I seem to recall that, if you crank up and immediately shut off, it allows just a tad of oil to bypass the seals and thus, it gets burned off on the next startup...

I have seen this condition once on my 5.4... immediately before it happend (about an hour prior), I had cranked it up, immediately dropped it into gear, moved the truck about a foot (so that my tailgate wouldn't get scratched by my garage door) and shut it off. Total on time was probably 2 seconds. The next startup had the blue puff...

More accurately it's the valve stem seals, since you can't replace the valve stems without replacing the valves. Like RP already said if you start the engine for a short burst then shut it down excess oil collects around the valves then wicks down the stem into the cylinder. The next time you start it you'll get a puff of blue out the tailpipe. Yours sounds excessive though, I would suspect valve seals. If you still have some warranty I would get it checked out.
