Need a key!

I received only one key upon my purchase and discovered that it has a chip in it which prevents hardware stores from making duplicates. Do I go to the dealer or a locksmith?

You can still have them cut a key it just won't start the truck. I had one cut at Wallyworld to keep in my wallet just in case I should lock my keys inside.

You have to be careful where you go - I know the closest wally to me (there are 2 within 10 min or so) won't cut any that have a chip. In fact, they even have a little sticker or signage telling you that. Obviously you can harass them to do it, or just go to a locksmith. But yes... you can at least get a new one cut and keep in your wallet as tbird suggested incase you lock your keys in your truck. That way you can get into your truck, get your main key, and be on your way

Thanks!

Now, any ideas what the cost will be at the dealer. I did not purchase the truck there.

Again, thank you for your help.

I've been quoted from $40 to $120 for labor alone. it just depends on the dealer. I got a spare off eBay for $15.00 shipped. The dealer typically wants about $80.00 for the key itself

good luck. once you have 2 keys, you can program them yourself

Wow. I need to look into that! Is the self-programming difficult? Where can I find instructions? I appreciate your prompt reply.

Get the key from Ebay and call around. I had a locksmith program 2 new keys when I only had 1 original and it is a hell of a lot cheaper then the dealer around me.

when you look on eBay, alot of the people on there tell you how in the auction description. If I weren't so lazy I'd go check my owners manual. I'm 90% sure that the manual tells you how also

it's just a bunch of key on/off and then insert the new key

while you're there, you should also pick up a new key fob (if you've got keyless entry). eBay is awesome

To the original poster, do you have a new bodystyle truck or????

Some identifying info would be helpful.
