Thumbs down Spitting, Sputtering, Missing...?

Last night on my way home ~1am I was cruising down the highway at 80-85mph when all of a sudden my check engine light starts blinking. While driving I checked the owners manual and it indicates that a blinking light means the engine is missing - and sure enough, it was. Down on power and running like crap, I continued to drive it ~35 miles until I got home.

When I got home the truck was smoking out the exhaust and smelling like fuel big time, idling rough, etc.

I have an 05 FX4 with the 5.4L - just rolled 52k miles with no remaining warranty.

Any ideas what could be wrong??

Injectors, fouled plugs, coil packs, bad fuel, it's hard to say but I wish you luck and hopefully you don't have a huge repair bill, keep us posted! :o

Injector, Happened to me on my 05. If you take a OHM meter to each injector you’ll find at least one that stuck open.

You could also have a clogged cat.

I bet it's a bad coil pack or a wire that Power's a coil pack. I had the same issue. Took it to the dealer and they found a wire to a coil pack burnt in half. Cost me a whopping $45.00...

Sounds like a/an injector(s) are stuck. Don't drive it, you need to find out which injectors are stuck. Cranking the engine up now with faulty injectors could hydrolock it, bending/breaking connecting rods.

The back 2 injectors on the driver's side are stuck open. I'm going to put 2 new injectors and a set of plugs in it and hope it's not hydrolocked.

Any suggestions on where to find new injectors?

Be sure to spin the engine over with the plugs out and injectors disconnected. This'll blow out any fuel that's pooled up on top of the piston. And do be sure to follow the procedures to remove the spark plugs so you don't risk breaking any upon removal.

This happened to my truck a few weeks ago, #5 injector was stuck open and dumping fuel in to the motor. There was raw fuel in the exhaust pipe and when I pulled the oil dipstick I could smell it in the oil as well.

Luckily the motor isn't broken - we replaced the two injectors and have the truck back up and running.

After my first initial battle with cam phasers and now this most recent scare with hydrolock - I'll be selling the truck to CarMax later this week.

I love the truck, but without a warranty it's just too risky to make that $450 payment per month.
