smell of gas

Recently when I start up my 05 supercrew I get a smell of gas it usually goes away pretty quick but sometimes it hangs around for awhile. Also when I got on the freeway a while back and a friend was following he said I put out a puff of black smoke. Sounds like i am running rich but I dont know about the smell. Any I deas before I take it in? Oh yea I have a 5.4 with 32,000 miles. Thanks

I had that problem a while back. Just light a match and it should take care of it. Seriously though I know this issue has been brought up on here and fixed by the dealer before, so I am sure others will chime in with something more useful than a comment like mine!

Check the vapor canister, the purge valve may not be operating correctly and it's dumping excess fuel vapor into the engine.
