Startup rattle...

If i let my truck sit for more than say 24 hours i usually get the rattle upon startup. I have always used motorcraft fl-820S along with the motorcraft 5w-20 oil. I have changed the oil myself and let the dealer change it. It does not matter if the oil is fresh or got 3,000 miles on it. It only does it on the first startup of the day. After that it doesn't happen until it sits for about a day Surely it is not the anti-drainback valves on all the filters? Is this normal or something that needs to be looked at?

Its a 2005 5.4 4x4 S-cab with just over 31K on the odometer.

My cam phasers are kinda loud also. Espcially at a drive thru man it sound horrible. And 1 out of every 2 startups I will get the rattle not every time though. I have a powertrain warranty Im wondering if I need to take it in and see what they say?

Try a synthetic oil such as Mobil 1. I switched over after my first oil change, I now have 10,000mi & engine is smooth as butter & quiet at startup........

Mine does it every now and then, and I'm pretty sure it's the driver's side cam phaser.

If the noise goes away after a few seconds, I doubt it's the cam phasers. I get the 1 sec rattle on the first start up as well and it was the exact same way before and after I had the cam phasers changed. When the cam phasers were bad, the ticking got louder as the truck got warmed up and it was HORRIBLE at a drive thru

Cam phasers can make noise on cold start up as well.

Mine were not loud at start up at all and it was hard to differentiate the cam phaser noise from the injector ticking.

Yup, I've got the 1-second startup rattle too. Only on the 1st startup of the day. Goes away immediately. I've also had both cam phasers replaced recently, so that wasn't the problem.
